Not a big story but it brought up a fact of life regarding our current education system that I was aware of but not fully conscious of, at least not at this level.
While I firmly believe one of the best things that could happen to the human race at this point would be the total collapse of the internet, these two kids brought down their school's Wi-Fi network!
But what stands out more to me is, our kids are being taught on the internet with Chromebooks these days. They're glued to screens all day at school. No wonder they have their noses glued to screens all day after school too. It's a major factor in their education! Educational click-bait.
The rich swipe higher education while our kids have to swipe a basic education. lol
2 students at a N.J. high school charged with jamming schools Wi-Fi to avoid exams

"Two freshmen at Secaucus High School, using an app or a computer program, successfully crashed the schools Wi-Fi network on multiple occasions to get out of taking exams, authorities said Monday.
Two 14-year-old boys were charged with computer criminal activity and conspiracy to commit computer criminal activity after school officials notified police on Thursday. Because they are juveniles, their names are not being released.
...
Since much of the schools curriculum is internet-based, the lack of Wi-Fi connection disrupted the students daily assignments. It is believed that the two boys took requests from other students to bring down the network.
...
One day we were supposed to be doing work on our Chromebooks, but we had no activity whatsoever to do in class because the Wi-Fi shutdown, said Diego, a 10th grader at the 634-student high school on Millridge Road. It interrupted the whole class, unfortunately."
No activity whatsoever because the Wi-Fi shutdown???!
This isn't education. It sounds more like someone baby sitting a classroom of the kids while they surf the web.

(146,345 posts)Of course, the school reacted by installing a padlock on the fire alarm handle so it wouldn't work any longer. I always wondered what we were supposed to do if there was an actual fire after that.

(1,220 posts)Kids could get away with that stuff in the days before the surveillance state had cameras everywhere! They never padlocked ours but they had janitors and everyone available patrolling hallways on test days.
I never did it. I like tests. I know. Weird. But I know who it was as did just about every other kid in school. It's funny how people can keep common knowledge from crossing the generational divide.

(4,654 posts)was putting the school on call block. All lines. It was one of those old * codes on the landline. That way the school couldn't call my house when I was skipping, or call my parents when I was in trouble (usually for skipping school, lol!)
Told my Mom about it several years ago and she was equally split between laughing and smacking at me while exclaiming, "You little shit!"

(52,172 posts)no wifi, no exam. We had our wifi go out on exam day after several hours. Those who hadn't finished had to start completely over. It was a nightmare.

(1,220 posts)IMO, it's the equivalent of internet voting or gambling. Paper is just mandatory in some situations. Relying on technology for everything has some very dangerous downsides.

(52,172 posts)I don't like it either but it is what it is. My math 3 kids take a 60 question test for 4 hours on the computer.

Your neighborhood kids are probably all over your shit, since they have all the time in the world. . .
and you don't know about it.

WPA-2 is not secure anymore. WPA-3 is coming out, with one Netgear router is offering support for it.
Most routers can support WPA-3, with a flashing.

I used to believe technology was a force for good. I no longer believe that.

The NSA thought they were being slick, to force US computer systems to have NSA backdoors, because who would know or use them, except for the NSA? While Intel has their side OS built into their chips, AMD has something similar.
Well, like any secret, it leaked. Now, almost every computer in the US can be accessed in seconds without leaving any footprints. It kind of explains how Hillary's server was hacked so easily. Well, that and it did not use a 3-tier server/firewall construct. A lone server is open for hacking.
Right before Obama left office, he expanded the government's ability to search computers on a single warrant to one million. Just ask yourself, how does the government hack into 1 million computers so easily??? Backdoors.

(1,220 posts)What the hell, I don't have a smart phone. I think I'll buy a Huawei. Can't be any worse than the rest. It just depends on who you want to give your entire life to. Or can we stop any of them now? No. We can't.

(17,865 posts)pencil/pen and paper have been adequately studied. We are talking about a technology that has been used for a very long time. A Scientific American article from several years ago talked about the importance of tactile feel for early readers.

Also computers are very cumbersome for math, science, and engineering exams. Chemistry is a nightmare. Showing methodology in engineering problems is more important than the final answer.
Also, I think something is to be gained by composing in long hand for at least some writing assignments.
