trump-could-become-first-female-president-under-new-legislation gop-lawmaker-says

Rep. Matt Gaetz R-Fla., said Tuesday he will not support The Equality Act in part because its provisions that seek to prohibit discrimination of transgender individuals could hypothetically lead to President Trump declaring himself the first female president

If President Trump were to say, ‘I’m am now the first female president,’ who would celebrate that?” said Gaetz in a House Judiciary Committee hearing on the legislation.

Gaetz said he would not support the legislation because of the possibility of people abusing the new protections in the bill.

“I strongly support the rights of transgender individuals,” Gaetz said. “But I am concerned about the potential bad actors who would exploit the provisions for their own gain.”

the provisions for their own gain." Really?

I'll admit that I sometimes have difficulty fully understanding transgender or non-binary or other such things, but that's MY limitation, not someone else's. I am fully on board with going along with what someone else tells me they are or how they identify.

Just don't change it from day-to-day: female one day, male another, non gender get another. Or, if you do, you will need to announce to everyone around you each at every day what you are right now.

While I appreciate the acknowledgement in the second paragraph that not fully understanding is your limitation, your final paragraph implies that establishing one's gender identification is something done on a whim - like putting on a different set of clothes.

My high school sweetheart has known she was a woman since her preteen years. She finally could not live any longer with the lie in her 5th decade of life, forfeited any relationship with her siblings because of it, a year or two later had to pretend to be male when her parents died in order to be able to attend their funerals (after having been talked out of coming out to them by her siblings - because it might kill them). She moved to a different state to start a new career - and risked even that to come out to her new employer a year or so later - and risked losing her decades long marriage. She also spent a lot of emotional energy strugging to convince herself that she was not a freak - and that she might even be able to present as a woman without being perceived as a freak - or perhaps she should just accept that she would never be able to live as herself.

Not to mention that transgender women are murdered at a higher rate than pretty much any other group of individuals, or that the suicide rate among transgender individuals is also sky high.

It is not a whim - and the joking suggestion that one should just announce whaterver gender they are choosing to be on a particular day is insensitive, at best.

I was trying to express that *I* am the one who has limitations, who doesn't fully understand.

I am 70 years old, which is not much of anb excuse, I know. But I came of age in an era when gay men and lesbian women stayed firmly in the closet. Luckily (and I really do mean luckily) I was an airline ticket agent in the 1970s, which means that a number of the men I worked with were gay, and I went through the process of seeing them come out.

I want to emphasize that because of my personal experience and limitations, I have no idea what it feels like to be trans gender. In no small part because of my age I tend to be isolated from such things.

Recently I was sitting with some acquaintances at a science fiction thing and when I spoke to someone who appeared to me to be female and she, I was corrected and told they preferred the pronoun they. I immediately acquiesced/concurred (not sure which word is more appropriate here) and then said, that I hope I would be forgiven if I got it wrong, as this was my first experience with such preference.

Again, I apologize for insensitivity. I am still learning about these things.

He might feel better and be more empathetic if he finally admits the truth about himself.

He’s going for a distraction to discount & minimize the issue. Pay should be connected to the job, not who does it.
