No doubt, I agree with your point and I'm really not trying to hold Rod up as the paragon of ethics. CincyDem Apr 2019 #3

...IMHO, I think he picked him because Wittaker had proverd himself willing to view the law a tool to be used for the benefit of himself and his bosses. He was the closest available unethical lawyer Trump could find who could be easily dropped into Sessions role without delay.

Trump had to do something to keep Rod out of the top job, even if temporarily.

I know Rod's reputation around here is less than stellar because of his involvement in the Barr Summary - but let's not forget that what we know about Rod's involvement...we learned that from Barr in the memo.

Personally, I think Rod is a traditional republican lawyer...one who will spin everything to the republican side but within the generally accepted rule of law (i.e. pre-trump version). I think if Rod got the top job, even temporarily, it would cut off the flow of information from DoJ to the WH. Unacceptable to Trump, especially at a time when there was so much going on.

So - Wittaker stood in Trump's favorite intersection...unethical and easy to move unilaterally.

But, to be honest, we'll never really know what's going on in that deteriorating mind under the orange top. And, to be honest, would you really want to know...talk about a house of horrors.

maybe a better way to say it is that he might the least unethical of the bunch. Not ethical, just least unethical.

I don't think we have any friends in DoJ leadership these days. We only have enemies that range on a scale from total slime to pretty slippery. There are no Elliot Richardsons and there certainly are no Eric Holders or Janet Lynches.

Barr and Wittaker, to me, are in the slime...Rod might only be slippery. My measure is that Trump, for whatever reason, seems to be afraid of him which leads me to believe he's not sufficiently compliant (anymore) and might have some small number of ethical cells in his body vs. the rest of the trash Trump's brought into DoJ (and the rest of the Exec Branch).
