Bush Foundation wants retired Air Force One plane in museum

HOUSTON — The George and Barbara Bush Foundation has asked that an Air Force One plane set for retirement in 2025 be permanently exhibited at the late president’s museum at Texas A&M.

If approved, the U.S. Air Force would permanently loan the Boeing VC-25A to the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station, Texas, the Houston Chronicle reported. Bush died Nov. 30 at age 94, just months after the death of former first lady Barbara Bush, his wife of 73 years.

“He had such a personal history with flying and that plane. He loved the plane,” said Jim McGrath, vice president of the Bush Foundation and the couple’s primary representative in their final years.

Air Force One was introduced during World War II to ensure the president’s safe passage. The plane targeted for the presidential library is one of two brought into service in 1990, during George H.W. Bush’s presidency. The pair are modified 747-200s that were built in Everett.

How large is the museum? That's a big plane.

As long as the museum pays for the upkeep of the plane they can have it. I don't really see a problem with that. There are only so many places large enough for one of those and TX is one of those places with lots of space. Not just the space between all the ears of the GOP down there.

4. Once it goes on static display there really isn't much to keep up.

Aside from vacuuming the carpet and general cleaning, there isn't much else to maintaining a museum piece.

7. I would like to agree with you. I cannot.

If they have to keep it intact there's going to be some weather exposure. Painting a 747 is non-trivial. There will be thousands of people treading throughout parts of it. That will cause wear and tear. Replacing worn items, even the interior items, won't be cheap.

I don't have any problem with all that happening. I'd love to tour a former Air Force One 747. We paid for the thing.

I just think the upkeep needs to be up to the museum.

Come on, it'll be like Elvis' plane at Graceland. There will be an extra fee of $25/$50 to tour it in addition to the regular tour.

I just want that $$ to go to the upkeep. Not my taxes.

I just have a suspicion the museum would probably like to charge that upkeep back to the OWNER of the airplane - the US - you and me.

Think of the people we are dealing with here. We're dealing with Republicans. They don't like to pay for ANYTHING they take advantage of as long as they can get away with it.

I could easily see them charging-back the Air Force for the upkeep and getting away with it.

...including the airplane and copter tours. For travelling exhibits like Pompeii we paid an additional fee of probably a whole $5.

12. It works out quite well in the Ronald Reagan museum in Simi Valley, CA....

There's the museum and the exhibits and the travelling special exhibits (Genghis Khan; Pompeii), plus restaurant and gift shop -- and then there's the glass-fronted hangar with AF 1 and Marine 1, and you can tour those as well.

Altogether a nicely done space.
