French President Macron vows to rebuild Notre Dame Cathedral within five years

French President Emmanuel Macron vowed Tuesday to rebuild the fire-ravaged Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris within five years, saying an "even more beautiful" landmark is possible.

The iconic house of worship was almost destroyed by flames Monday, and Macron said in a nationally televised address that France would spare no money or effort to make it whole again.

"And I tell you tonight with force, we are this people of builders," Macron said, according to a translation by NBC News.

"We have so much to reconstruct. So yes, we will rebuild the Cathedral of Notre Dame more beautifully. And I would like it to be achieved in five years from now. We can do it. And we will mobilize."

I'm sure the first order of business is keeping the rain out.

I think five years is a really aggressive schedule, but they do have the money and the will. And the damage other than the roof and spire seems far less than I could imagine last night.

And as much plywood as he can fit in the truck. Maybe rent one of those box trucks they have in the parking lot.

I'm sure there will be generous donations from the US and the other European countries.

That and it's fucking France - they've got the best people in the world for this sort of work.

And thank the Parisien firefighters - they saved most of the church. Yes, there's a lot of damage, but the outer walls are intact, the bell towers are intact, and they even managed to save most of the art.

The sheer size and complexity of this feat of humanity will not take just 5 years to complete and if by some miracle it does get done in such a short period of time, I'll end up questioning the quality of the workmanship.

what can be salvaged and restored. I also think before it should be rebuilt they have to investigate how this happened and what measures can be put in place that it won't happen again with any cathedral. They can put in some new fireproofing and special measures (I am not saying water sprinkler but something). There is also the fact that the spire is gone and the things held inside it. I am glad the rose window is safe since that's my favorite part of a cathedral but it's still sad.
