He should stay a Repub then if he can't win the primary jump to independent. That would hit Dump hard. It would be awesome.

(17,377 posts)Statistically insignificant. There has been nothing to suggest so far that his campaign is a serious one.

(58,785 posts)on the top of the Republican ticket to not voting or voting Democrat (not!) for some who've become disaffected with Trump himself. Also, if Trump does get in bad trouble, he'll of course be an imperfect alternative for determinedly partisan voters to rally around.
The trumpsters elected Trump as a rebellion against the Republican leadership's alliance with the ultrawealthy against them, though, and Weld's mostly just more of the same economically.

(58,785 posts)articles on him when he was talking about announcing. Aside from that...?? Guessing that since his chances are considered almost impossible they won't be encouraging their alliance to invest anything of significance in him.
It'd make sense these unstable days to have his candidacy as a card in their pocket, though. They'd be camped in his inside pocket if he turned into an accidental president.

(3,635 posts)who does make a good 'small c' conservative case against Trump, one that may at least shame the few remaining decent Repub voters into not voting for Trump in 2020. At least we can hope.
It all depends if Weld gets some traction in the media, and if Trump engages him.

Nixon was the exception, as he won by a big %... but 18 months later he resigned in disgrace, so maybe McCloskey did some damage by increasing Nixon's paranoia which caused him to cheat at the election.
Anyway, even an unsuccessful challenger apparently causes some damage to the incumbent.
So go, Weld, though in the interview I heard, I was impressed mostly by his inability to realize that most of what he "proposed," the Democrats had already enacted.

(17,377 posts)Certainly not a Ted Kennedy, and not even as close to as prominent a political figure as Pat Buchanan in the early 90s.
Each of these challengers, especially Reagan and Kennedy, were giants in their respective parties, Weld is well...not.
I agree with the general premise here, and if Trump drew a challenger like a Romney, he would be in real trouble.
But as a president with greater than 90% approval among his own party, he looks very different from the three presidents you mentioned, at least as things stand now, and I think some might be fooling themselves to believe that Weld actually represents a serious challenge.
