House Democratic leaders say no immediate plans to open impeachment proceedings after Mueller report

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s leadership team told lawmakers Monday that they had no plans to immediately open impeachment proceedings against President Trump and would focus instead on investigations.

In an evening conference call, the leaders described the near-term strategy after the release of special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s report last week, with some in the Democratic Party pressing for the House to initiate steps to oust Trump.

According to three officials on the call, leaders told rank-and-file lawmakers — who were scattered across the nation, back in their districts for a two-week congressional recess — that investigative committees would continue their inquiries and see where they lead.

Even House Financial Services Chairman Maxine Waters, who last week warned that “Congress’ failure to impeach is complacency in the face of the erosion of our democracy and constitutional norms,” did not push the matter. Instead, the California Democrat, a vocal Trump critic who is probing the president’s business practices before he won the 2016 election, made a point of clarifying that she is not pressuring lawmakers to join her effort.

The Watergate hearings weren't called impeachment hearings, but they led up to the House impeachment hearings.

This is a poorly written article that seems to be downplaying the strong reaction that Democrats have had. Some on the call did advocate for impeachment hearings right now.

I'm a very strong advocate for impeachment, but I can wait a short while as we wait to hear from Mueller and McGahn.

It is AMAZING that just five days after the release of the report, the momentum for impeachment is so strong that Dems had to openly comment on whether they will start it now or later.

Congress needs to get its investigations done before proceeding with any possible impeachment.

Here's the real deal - Our leadership is hoping they can increase the public polling favoring impeachment by holding regular hearings/investigations vs. the same exact same hearings/investigations under Articles of Impeachment. Of course, our potential to get access to all evidence (tax returns, etc.) is much greater under the Impeachment investigation conducted by the Judicial Committee.

They can present their case against trump through impeachment investigations and then vote to decide whether to send it to the Senate. House Impeachment = Investigate and then Vote.

Bottom line - Pelosi doesn't want to do it until she starts seeing the numbers rising for impeachment.

At this point , I won't comment further.

Waters on this:

Even House Financial Services Chairman Maxine Waters, who last week warned that “Congress’ failure to impeach is complacency in the face of the erosion of our democracy and constitutional norms,” did not push the matter

Congress took a oath for those Constitutional norms if Congress turns away from this they are undermining their duty. McConnell is the biggest problem here, he needs the spotlight on him, and this POS tRump will even be more emboldened to do as he wishes there goes checks and balances and our democracy. Scary situation.

The Congress will be nothing for a rubber stamp for this despicable POS tRump.
