Why the GOP is saying they hope the Dems begin impeachment proceedings, and that it will help Trump:
When they warn us that if we do something, it will help their cause and harm ours, that means that they DON'T want us to do that. Right now, their goals are:
1. To set up a scenario in which the Democrats are afraid to do the right thing (impeachment), and the GOP is doing that because in reality, they KNOW that beginning impeachment proceedings will actually HURT Trump, and they DON'T want us to do it!
They have set up a scenario via the dishonest PR rollout by Barr and Trump that not only sought to further a dishonest narrative about the Mueller investigation, it has sought to foment doubt in the minds of enough Democrats to prevent impeachment proceedings from starting prior to the 2020 election. So far, IT HAS WORKED! Over the years, they have done this to us with regard to important issue after important issue, and we usually have taken the bate, just like too many congressional Democrats are doing now!
Think about it. First, they started with the Barr lie that told us that "there is no evidence of collusion", when the reality is that there is quite a bit of evidence of collusion.....just not enough to bring charges (thanks in large part to obstruction.....something almost NEVER mentioned by the press.....some forget that there is a reason why people obstruct justice). But over and over again they have kept saying "no evidence of collusion". Much of the uninformed electorate now believes that. Even the press pushed that meme until reality eventually set in, but much damage was done by their malpractice, also.
They continued.....by trying to make the point that Mueller could not determine whether obstruction had occurred, and because of that, it was left to Barr to decide that charges were not supportable. Of course, a reading of the report shows otherwise. If you read his words, it was obvious that he WAS NOT neutral on obstruction, that he wanted Congress to take up the matter, and that the DOJ rule against indicting sitting presidents drove the lack of action by Mueller, in spite of the clear evidence of obstruction. So there they were, for a month or so lying about that, something that the Democrats could not even begin to dispute without a reading of the report (thanks to the Trump/Barr dishonest PR rollout/cover up of the full report). So now they have much of the uninformed electorate believing that not only was there no obstruction, but also that the false conclusion that no obstruction had occurred was a conclusion that was reached by Mueller.
Continuing on.....they then tried to equate the Trump situation with the Clinton impeachment proceedings, using that utterly false equivalency to support the concept that just like the GOP shot themselves in the foot with the Clinton effort, the Democrats would shoot themselves in the foot if they made that effort against Trump. They are trying to paper over the reality that the Clinton obstruction was a singular event surrounding a sex act, while the Trump obstruction was a multifaceted effort surrounding NATIONAL SECURITY. So now we also have a lot of the uninformed electorate having it pre-suggested in their minds, via an attempted self-fulfilling prophecy, that not only were the two situations at least somewhat equivalent, but maybe they should react negatively toward Democrats if and when they were to take similar action.
They set up those drumbeats as devices to be utilized.......(see #2, just below):
2. To try to effect the public's perception and get a wave going against further investigations and impeachment. This is just another chapter in the aforementioned dishonest PR rollout. They and their house organs (Fox News and right wing radio), along with Trump sycophants in Congress, are unified, loud, REPETITIVE, and out in force as we speak. "Move on", they say. "It's been going on for two years, thirty-five million dollars have been spent, and Mueller concluded that their was no collusion and no obstruction."
The truth is that impeachment investigations and proceedings would be riveting to the public, especially those who had not read the Mueller report, when former Trump acolytes would dramatically bring to life and expand upon what was chronicled in the Mueller report. Just think back to Watergate. Once Dean and the others were on live TV in peoples' homes exposing the dirty deeds, anyone with any sense realized what a criminal Nixon was. Plus, as we remember, new explosive evidence was brought to light thanks to the Watergate hearings.
The same thing would happen with regard to the Trump situation if impeachment hearings moved forward. The irony is that Trump's moves to defy the law with respect to Congressional investigations may force Pelosi's hand on impeachment, which would almost certainly redound to Trump in a harshly negative way.
Yes.....fret not that Trump may force the Democrats to begin impeachment proceedings. THAT may be the ultimate example of the many instances in the last two years when Trump has shot himself in the foot! I believe that he and his minions are in the process of saving us from the negative consequences of our usual pusillanimity.
