Another department store has gone completely out of business.

Shopko, a once prominent business, has close their doors for good. They have fought off the likes of Walmart and Target, along with the internet, but the past 2 years they have not been able to keep up with the other business. The distribution center in Omaha employed over 300 people from the front office to dock workers and truck drivers. In the mid 1990's, built a new state of the art distribution center on the out skirts of Omaha. They were booming with business and had just purchase another smaller company, Pamida. It is becoming ever so common for the thriving department stores of the past, to close. Wards, Yonkers and Sears are few of the many who have closed in the past few years. Large monopoly companies like Amazon and Walmart are cornering the market and are making millions while the smaller companies struggle to stay afloat. Shopko also had stores in 15 states and 3 or 4 distribution centers in Wisconsin, Idaho, including the Omaha DC.

Kind of a smaller Target. That one always seemed to have a lot of customers, but I suppose it doesn't take much to run into the red.

Nebraska and had two growing boys. It was only about 5 minutes from our house and usually carried whatever it was I needed at a reasonable price. This was 1994-2000. Even then I disliked going to Walmart and Shopko was a reasonable alternative.
