They sent this to my IPhone this morning. Just checking alerts now:
Donald Trump was right: He can get away with almost anything -- a factor that is likely to mean an even more unchained presidency over the next 18 months.
This makes me want to scream and HURL! Posting this only so that DU can tell me why this is wrong and make me feel better. He does look like the typical fat and ugly GOP asshole like Barr, which gives me some hope though that he is just a stooge (Collinson)

(59 posts)I think we all underestimated Trump. He is a world class buffoon, but also a world class crook. Sort of an idiot savant of evil. He, along with a few hand picked stalwarts inside the GOP, have effectively pulled off a coup and overthrown the elected government. This action, combined with sort of a nail biting, pearl clutching response from the Democrats mean that Trump is effectively a dictator and short of the military stepping in to stop him, he might be around until he dies. If you think he will let his AG or staff members go to jail, I think you have another thing coming. Democrats will continue to scream "But he is not following the rules" while Trump gives the world the finger. And he will always be backed by an aggressive and loyal 30% of the population.

(6,535 posts)and then another apathetic third of the population just watching, even if full on extermination efforts should begin on the final third. It's happened before; it's human nature...people don't want to get involved or be inconvenienced, and unless there is an effective rule of law and civil enforcement apparatus (an actual justice system, if such a thing can really exist among humans), evil people will ascend to power, mostly because they're the ones who want it the most.

(5,081 posts)He is stating the obvious. The House singularly can do nothing directly to stop Trump.
The best hope is that in the next year, they effectively weaken his support among his
shakier voters. That facts may still matter to at least some of these Republican loyalists.
And remember it will not take many. If his support weakens, watch the elected rats
start to leave the ship. The whole thing is a shaky coalition.
This is not to deny that we are as a nation on very dangerous ground. But we already
know this; we live with it everyday. It is a time to be brave and be focused.

(58,785 posts)but maybe thats because Ive suspected/known what theyre up to increasingly over time.
Its a necessary step for it to get so bad that people start understanding. Even icy bones are a good sign. I thought we were going to stop them in 2016.

(1,835 posts)For the magats to finally wake up, but by that time, Russian troops will be patrolling the streets of DC and itll be too late for even the Magats. By that time, the Magats probably would have killed off anyone except for the blonde-hair blue eyes so at least it will be their problem, not ours!
Big Blue Marble
(5,081 posts)Some never wake up, but some will. All Republican voters are not true Magats. Notice how just the release of the Mueller Report knocked Trump's polling. It does not help us to paint such dark and dire pictures of our future. We are a more resilient people than you give us credit for being. We have a heritage of nearly 250 years and a constitutional framework that no other nation has ever had.
It is possible that the center will not hold; but it is better to build a vision of strength and
hope than to spread doubt and fear. Where would you have been in 1942 with our Pacific
Navy wiped out and Hitler dominating Europe? What vision would you have painted? Thankfully, our
parents and grandparents took the challenge to prevail rather than prematurely to call
defeat.
The threats are different; the challenges are different. This time it is our turn to face these challenges
and save our Republic. This time it starts with us.

(5,081 posts)With more investigations and exposure to Trump's corruption some can be peeled away.
I saw this with Nixon. It will happen again. Encourage your representatives to keep
up the investigations. Show your support. This is not the time to give up; but to
find resolve.
P.S. The center is the stability of our Republic.

But.
Today's Repubs are not the Repubs of Nixon's time. Today's Repubs are radicalized, Teabag-ized, Fox-ized, and morally lobotomized. I'm not sure that ANYthing would shake their faith.
trump wasn't kidding about shooting somebody on 5th Ave.
Big Blue Marble
(5,081 posts)There are a core of supporters who would go down with the ship. There are others who when shown more openly his corruption will vote him out. Remember only 90,000 voters in four states made Trump president.
This isnt really about positive thinking; this is about holding to our core values. It is about finding our resolve in the face of adversity. Our forefathers and foremothers were made of sterner stuff. We have that same resolve available to us. Future generations are asking us to do what our ancestors did for us. Stay strong and hold to our values to protect our Republic,
NewsCenter28
(1,835 posts)I fully concede that. However, going back to the World War 2 analogy, final victory was, indeed, ours; but dont forget the tremendous military and civilian suffering that was required to obtain that victory. Also, I just hope that we arent in a similar period as 1933-1939 in Nazi Germany right now. In short, I hope that the worst of our suffering is over whereas if this turns out like 1935 Germany, the true horrors havent even begun to make themselves apparent yet.
I did take a look at the polling numbers as I do once per day and was cheered by how his Quinnipiac and Yougov polls are so low, and how his average is around 41.8. As long as it stays there, I really do believe that positive vision you lay out will carry the day. Sometimes, I just get worried it wont.

(10,900 posts)Voting him out seems way too late in the process... what can be done right now?
Big Blue Marble
(5,081 posts)we are late in the process as it started back in the Reagan Era (Error). We are in uncharted waters.
Our only guide is our Constitution and our inner values. As individuals, we must stay informed and committed to encouraging our Congressional reps to investigate and possibly move toward
impeachment as well as work toward the 2020 election.

(28,347 posts)I haven't read the link you posted yet, but I'm very worried myself, especially witnessing Barr yesterday.
Barr holds a lot of power. All those investigations Mueller fielded out -- Barr can control them. But he has no control over the states and their investigations, or how they adjudicate them.
Yup, I am worried, to the point where it makes me sick ... literally. And, scared.

(1,977 posts)Here's the thing. We all already know how fucked up shit is right now and how bad it can and will get. It's the folks that don't know yet that are in for a world of shit when the idea of the United States is left smoldering. Yeah it is going to suck for everyone but when folks have their "and then they came for me" moment it is going to hit hard.
Buckle up, work hard and hope like hell we can get this train back on track. There's no quick fix on this.

(22,976 posts)They cant get enough of their Neanderthal figurehead; for them, etc he can do NO wrong. If one ever undertook the loathsome task of looking at RW websites, or watching the vile prime-time Hannity for even a few moments, one can grasp how vast the divide really is. Republicans would LOVE to have a right-wing fascist dictator who punishes the libs. Thats how simple-minded and cul-tlike theyve become.
its all there in plain sight: EVERYTHING, every Republican-hatched screw-ups and firings are also very telling.
But whenever things go south, the blame is projected onto the lunatic socialist Democrats and pronto. Its as evergreen a right-wing trope can be.

(9,091 posts)and his support won't stay where it is. His support is rock solid. A few low polls don't mean anything.
Democratic lawmakers seem unable to communicate any clear message to change his level of support, even though Trump is trying to take away their healthcare, social security, while giving to the rich. They can't even orchestrate a body blow to Barr when they get the chance to grill him.
Our only chance is 20/20 and polls that show that even Joe Biden is in single digits against Trump, show how easily this nightmare could continue for another six years, after which this will no longer look like America.
