(81,566 posts)Also expand the Senate (by adding DC, PR, and maybe splitting my state, California into two).
If Trump wins re-election and we do not take back the Senate in 2020 or 2022 (best of the worst case scenarios), there is an 80%+ chance the court will end up 7-2 or even 8-1 hard RW. If we win the POTUS but not the Senate, there is a high probability the Rethugs will never hold hearings on any SCOTUS replacement justice we nominate, and also, if we do win the POTUS this time, our chances in 2022 will also be diminished (of taking back the Senate).
We are caught in a constitutional clusterfuck.

WY has 2 senators for 500,000 residents.
40 million/500K = 80. 80 states, 160 senators to have equivalent representation as WY.
The imbalance in power is unsustainable.

(33,360 posts)they'd need to split into 80 States. The Senate gives underpopulated states disproportionate power, and that is unfair to populated states. Equal representation.
Sorry if that was unclear.

(43,479 posts)Expand it to 1001, maybe 1,501 and much more fairly distribute the numbers of seats. All it takes is an Act of Congress.
If we had proportional representation in terms of number of people per representative equal to the UK House of Commons, there would be 3,250 members of the US House. If we were equal to Sweden, around 11,500 in the US House. 435 for a nation of 330,000,000 is madness.

(50,562 posts)If Trump wins reelection and he has a Republican Senate to deal with, I predict there will be at least one assassination of a liberal Supreme Court justice. I wouldn't put it past them to try to kill every liberal federal judge in the country. These guys aren't going to wait around and HOPE a liberal judge or justice steps down; they will shoot enough of them to tip the courts so far to the right (and filled up with hard-right-wingers in their 30s and 40s who'll be there for decades) we'll never get them back in any of our lifetimes.
Trump is an evil, evil man. The sick part is, the people who claim to be Christians are all on his side.

(2,013 posts)They'll just do whatever they want, change rules to just throw people off the court willy-nilly (they won't bother with assassination; they'll just start doing whatever). They're not following the rule of law NOW; imagine if he basically gets codified with another election.
I guess I just mean that it's literally the end of the Republic if he wins again. The Last President indeed. We HAVE to win. HAVE TO.

(103,856 posts)takes 9 to accept a case, and after acceptance, a random draw of 9 to hear/decide the case.
That would END all the bullshit cases..A coalition might accept a case and then end up NOT deciding it..karma !
Justices should be no younger than 60 and have maximum terms of 10 years..Mandatory retirement at 75..
That would make it an apolitical body with a reliable turnover that reflects the nation

(5,499 posts)It illustrates the irony of waiting to late to really care. And while Roe is a women's reproductive rights issue, it is also a major civil rights issue for everyone.
Let's predict the general reaction?

(18,486 posts)Many people didn't care about or bother to fight against minority voter suppression because, after all, it didn't affect THEIR ability to vote. So what's the big deal?
But what they didn't realize or care enough to think about is that most of the people who were prevented from getting to the polls and whose votes were suppressed would have voted for the same people they did and would have helped ensure pro-choice politicians were elected and prevent anti-choice Neanderthals from taking control of state legislatures and governorships across the country, where these laws are being enacted and signed into law.
This is a perfect example of how fighting for the right of others is in your own best interest.

It's also an illustration of why we are in for a world of hurt regarding environmental disaster and climate change. We're always looking for the path of least resistance.

And a lack of candidates willing to go to the mat on this.

(4,919 posts)The whole point of Roe is to restrain the states, especially the ones that want to jail women and their physicians. The point is a persons constitutional right to privacy and autonomy.

(18,486 posts)Abortion was a state's rights issue before Roe.
If it returns to that, women will suffer as their reproductive rights are left to state legislatures.

(61,693 posts)That's how it works. Roe v Wade decided that every woman in the U.S. has the right to decide to have an abortion (within lots of restrictions), no matter where she lives.

(33,360 posts)The only plan is "End Abortion, stop murder, save the innocent".
The planning stops at that point. They don't THINK about what happens when unwanted children are born, or all the hypothetical scenarios we propose - "give the baby up for adoption if you don't want it" is probably the closest thing there is to a plan.

Spring and Summer is the best time to protest.
After Roe is overturned, they will dig in, and it's a done deal. NOW is the time to be heard. They not only want to ban abortions, they want women to go to jail for up to 99 years for it. We've come too far to let this continue. imho.

(9,090 posts)those schools broadcast sports on 14 limbaugh stations. they give them cred and help them attract advertisers. all those stations follow the limbaugh lead. the local blowhards on those stations have to be pro republican and anti choice or they lose their jobs.
from republiconradio.org
GEORGIA 14 Georgia 7, Georgia Tech 5, Georgia Southern 2
if GA anti choice cons paid $1000/hr to support and elect republicans those stations would be worth $1,050,000/WEEK FREE to them (1000x15hrs/dayx5 =$75,000/ station)
and think about what difference that made in the stacey abrams 'defeat' - how many points was that worth? and in the next election?
students at those universities can protest right on campus - those schools have no excuse to keep supporting trump, global warming denial, and anti-choice motherfuckers. local GOP will freak out. all their pols know the importance of being able to ride limbaugh's/talk radio's trail of lies as well as RWTRs invisibility to the left.
anyone anywhere can record programs and podcasts on those stations and can use artificial intelligence-enhanced transcription such as at sonix.ai for $5/hr, and list advertisers with contact info with very little listening required. the companies that are helping republicans with this shit can be associated directly with the crap they sponsor.
when the ad industry realizes they're going to have to stop bundling advertisers onto those huge stations and start asking them all if they actually want to support anti-choice, trump, global warming denial they'll have to start applying actual market demand and it will kill the 20-1 monopoly. the ad industry will kill trump putin talk radio to be able to get their clients onto those huge radio stations without getting trashed. it's stoprush x 100.
from republiconradio.org
Artificial intelligence now makes it very easy to list talk radio advertisers
1) Record
Quicktime, on every Mac, is a basic app for recording audio streams. While playing the stream turn on Quicktime, go to 'File' and 'New Audio Recording'. Turn on the recorder and when you're done save it. With Quicktime it is necessary to have volume on. Other recording apps will allow recording multiple streams at the same time, pre scheduling, and editing.
2) Transcribe
At $5/hr and under, Sonix.ai may be the cheapest, quickest, and easiest transcription service. An hour takes minutes and is very accurate. When it's done they send an email with a link to the transcription in their editing program where it can be downloaded or tweaked and corrected on their site as you listen. It can also be stored there. The monthly subscription is $15 but they offer a 30 minutes free trial.
3) Search for "DOT" to identify advertisers
Live recordings of radio streams include advertisements and most announce web sites transcribed as "so-and-so-company dot com". Most advertisers can be found by searching for the word "dot". Sometimes the ads provided phone numbers. The Sonix text editor allows you to highlight and add notes. Each company or quote can get a note that is listed and numbered. The notes can then be copied and pasted elsewhere.
4) Contact
Most websites provide phone numbers and email addresses specifically for contact by potential customers. Complaint emails may get further up the chain of command than a phone call, and there's a lasting written record for employees to pass around. It may also be easier for sympathetic staff to pass on a comment to a boss in email form than personally.
