ON EDIT: To expand on where I'm coming from::
As a regular active duty enlistment (4 yrs), now veteran 50 yrs later, I don't think (but don't know for sure) that the ballcaps are part of the actual uniforms that are government issued and regulated. I think they are sold in the Ship's Store (= Base/Post Exchanges in other branches). While the "dixie cup" covers *are* uniform items.
Iow, the ballcaps with a ship's patch are worn by veterans for nostalgic pride in their ships they SERVED ON. So I don't think there's a regulation against wearing a ship's patch belonging to a different ship that is not a ship that was not your assigned duty station.
But it would stick in my craw to wear a patch of some Command I didn't serve on. Smacks of "stolen valor." The same as when the post office was selling stamps with a Purple Heart medal on it. I was actually SHOCKED when the clerk offered it to me to buy because she saw I was a veteran from my ship's ballcap and assumed any veteran would want to stick Purple Heart stamps on all the envelops. I said, GASPING, "I don't have a Purple Heart!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Now, that said, I *have* seen somebody wearing a ship's ballcap who said it was his Navy son's cap/ship. So, that goes down fine with me.
*******The other issue is McCAIN. I have never denigrated his or any veteran's honorable service, but McCAIN as separate from his service, I'll attack SHITLER for his attacks on the veteran but wearing the ship's patch not my own is a step too far off the gang plank.

(8,916 posts)ballcap with the ships official logo but a more modern cap with a "USS McCain" patch, the enemy of my chickenhawk is ok with me when it comes to military service, it should be a response to the magat hat...Trump attacks McCain: 'I like people who weren't captured"
It was an outrage and it intentionaly shamed the sailors on that ship, 0 to E1
