https://www.cnn.com/2019/05/31/us/virginia-beach-shooting/index.htmlThe shooting suspect was identified as DeWayne Craddock, according to a law enforcement official and a Virginia government source.
Craddock, 40, worked as a certified professional engineer for the city of Virginia Beach in the Public Utilities Department. He is listed on department news releases as a point of contact for information on local road projects over the past several years.
Authorities are investigating a possible motive.
The suspect is thought to have purchased the firearms legally, according to initial information that investigators have, the source says.
The chief confirmed that a .45 caliber pistol, a supressor and several empty, higher-capacity magazines were found near the gunman but wouldn't comment on the presence of a rifle.

Usually when these shootings happen, it turns out that that the person showed signs of some kind of disturbed behavior beforehand. Whatever ailed the guy mentally, it's beyond understanding why he'd kill a bunch of other people on his way out.
Sometimes you just don't know about people - all the more reason why guns shouldn't be readily available to anybody, any time.

(4,379 posts)Something has gone wrong in their life. In a moment of despair if a gun is near by they reach for it and it ends in tragedy.
I grew up with a girl who was very sweet, very pretty. Things went wrong in her life and in a moment of despair a rifle was near by in her fathers house. She stuck it in her mouth and blew her head off. I have never gotten over that.
When we teenagers I took her out target practicing in the woods behind my parents house. I helped her learn how to operate a rifle. Most people should not have easy access to guns. It simply is not safe.
