That's a $15,000 bottle of wine. From the Queen's private cellar.
It was available only at the head table.
Trump doesn't drink.
The Queen knows how to throw some stank.
(As was pointed out below, it was 1990, not 1900, and that makes it $8K, not $15K. Still, fun story)
(As was again pointed out below, that makes it $1K. FFS people it's still an expensive bottle of wine.)

Trump wanted daddy's attention and more importantly--daddy's inheritance.

(42,702 posts)I doubt it was a 1900.
Some cites list the price of the 1990 as around $900, others say its as high as $1700. But its nowhere near $15K.

(20,760 posts)Even cellared in conditions of maximum longevity a claret isn't likely to retain its character for nearly 120 years. There are wines that will last that long- mostly fortified ones like port and dessert wines like Chateau d'Yquem, but I'd look askance at a claret- even Lafite. It will be over the hill.
regretfully,

To accompany last nights menu, The Donald was served a senior selection of fine wines, including white Burgundy and some big-deal Claret, one of which was a Lafite Rosthchilde 1990 which, according to Wine Searcher, has an average retail price of £9,360, per bottle. This is England, though, so the Royal sommelier threw in a couple of English bins, a Windsor Great Park sparkling white to kick things off and non-vintage sparkling rosé from Hambledon in Hampshire to pair with the sable.

(43,357 posts)1982 is heaven in a bottle, and 2000 has the same potential. same for 2009, and 2010.
All four are 100 pt. wines. 2000 is the best value atm and will start to peak in the next 5 years or so and go on for another 30, 40 years.
cheers

(43,357 posts)On the overall scheme of things it is hardly a burning issue, and I do not want to sound pedantic and snobbish, as it is dealing with some of the most prestigious Bordeaux Grand Cru wines where even a lower end vintage costs 500 to 1000 USD (or more).
cheers

the wrong year
Eater fucked up too (just in another way that made the whole thing twice as confusing)
I knew as soon as I saw it, as I am very familiar with Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1er Cru. My father has taken me to vertical tastings before. 1990 was a fairly good year. 1982 and 1986 (especially '86) are even better. 1996 was a potential vintage of the half century. It will be extraordinary in about 5 to 10 years or so.
You never want to drink CLR young, it is far too tannic. 15 years minimum for most years. Also you will want to decant it for several hours prior to serving, to truly open up the incredible complexity.
