Nurse Beaten by Patient Denied Request for Unpaid Time Off and Fired

This is what happens when we let money influence politicians. I don't blame the sick patient.

Nurse Beaten Unconscious in Iowa
State law limits unions ability to bargain safety; putting public employees at risk
[link:https://ucommblog.com/section/state-politics/nurse-beaten-unconscious-iowa|

Iowa’s decision to weaken collective bargaining for state employees is putting state employees at risk. This claim was made by the AFSCME Council 61 after a nurse was beaten unconscious at a state mental health facility.

The nurse, Tina Suckow who was attacked by the patient, was put in the hospital for weeks and required surgery. Although the attack happened in October, she is still recovering. After she was unable to come to work due to her injuries and the state denied her request for time off without pay, Suckow was fired.

According to AFSCME, a 2017 state law limits the ability of government employee unions to negotiate resolutions on issues other than salary, including safety matters. The law also resulted in changes in employee grievance procedures. The union believes that this change prevented them from being able to fairly represent Suckow.

“Any reasonable human being should have concern because if it’s OK for the state of Iowa to treat workers this way, then Casey’s can do it, Ruan can do it, any employer in the state of Iowa can do it,” said Danny Homan, president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Iowa Council 61.

The union also has said that since the law took effect, terminations and forced resignations have tripled. They also warn that hospitals are becoming understaffed putting both workers and patients at risk.

The law, which was passed in 2017 with the help of big money groups backed by the Koch Brothers, was recently upheld in a 4-3 decision by the Iowa Supreme Court.

Horrifying! And criminal on the part of the state that caused her to be fired!

They didn't have security or any other help standing
by while the nurse attended to a volatile patient.

I have read there is a shortage of qualified help in
the medical field. Evidently the state of Iowa thinks
they are expendable.

My daughter has been a nurse on the mental health floor of a hospital in Iowa. She has been attacked as well, but her safety techs intervened in time. The patient tried to blind her with an object and did scratch the eye of the safety tech. My daughter is 5'1''.

A story around an earlier attack at Independence which left a nurse injured is that the nurse had to continue to care for the patient when the patient returned. It was either that or be fired.

My daughter is very fortunate that she works for the good hospital organization in the area. The other one does not treat their employees nearly as well.

As far as sick patients. Many know exactly what they are doing - they don't care. The one that attacked my daughter was one of them.

I had to stop working when I was 45.
I was lucky that I was able to get SSI after 2 years.
But we were without any income from me during that time and I had one child in college and another one going the next year.
If I had been a single mom, I would have been bankrupt. My husband worked 2 jobs.

This is criminal what is happening to this nurse.

Even with this law, we can have almost unbearable patient loads. Nonetheless, it's much better here than ANYWHERE.

What I don't get is that hospitals everywhere else always "poor mouth" about not being able to pay nurses better. How is it that some hospitals can pay 6 times what others pay, and they have the SAME reimbursements. . .

I will ALWAYS come down on the side of better pay for teachers, nurses, firefighters, etc. This is shameful the way this nurse was treated, and I am 100% certain that the sorry state of Iowa did it on purpose.

Every other state is begging for them.

Do hospitals in the state want to go completely out of business?

They are actually very good to work for. We also have several hospital affiliated nursing schools. My daughter went to one. The year she graduated they actually had a higher pass rate on NCLEX than the University of Iowa (nationally recognized). It was actually one person difference (I think her employer was 100%, and Iowa was in the high 90s%).

She is now working for the hospital that the nursing school is associated with as a nurse on a mental health floor.

She might not have a case for the wages because of the lack of protections in a contract, but she sure as hell should be entitled to a safe work environment.

what kind of institution would allow this to happen?
Where are the "managers?" Did you sign off on this?
Where is the Board of Directors? Is this how you want your place to be run?
Where is the community government? Is this how you want a "professional" organization in your community to behave?
Where is the State Board of Health? Are you sure you want your hospitals run this way?
Where is the Legislature? Is this the best that you can offer to the citizens of Iowa?
Where is the Governor? Do you want to be the head of a government that allows this to happen?

Truly, have we no heart anywhere anymore?
