(6,555 posts)to private and religious schools. If this becomes law, we need to start taxing private and religious schools. Some US taxpayers are upset about their tax money being used to support public education. I can't imagine they would be okay with funding private and religious schools.

Or, as the OP said, theft.

(15,286 posts)program that lets companies and individuals donate to private/parochial schools and get a tax credit for it. This bill wanted to double the credit from 100M to 200M. Since Dems picked up 6 seats in the state senate, the Rs no longer hold a supermajority there nor do they have one in the state house. So this bill was for show only.
Here is an interesting tidbit that few Pennsylvanians know. These type tax credit programs are issued on a first come, first serve basis and usually are used up just a few weeks or even days after they become available! Once the money is claimed, that's it, wait 'til next year.

(15,286 posts)the Ridge/Schweikert administration. Ridge left halfway through his 2nd term to the DHS job in the GW Bush admin. Schweikert finished Ridge's term.
Another interesting factoid, many of the dorms at Penn State main campus are named after PA governors.

(26,621 posts)The bill he vetoed gave a huge tax shelter to corps for giving to private/public schools..
The comments included much whining about school "choice" and union teachers, but most of the comments were favorable and get the concept of public schools.

(430 posts)Nail that to the church door next time a Republican screams about public funding for Planned Parenthood or abortions.
While we're at it, how about no public tax dollars for billionaires?

Dollar for dollar.
I can see Republican and Religious heads exploding.

(16,926 posts)where you're coming from and what point you are making, but - NO!
The constitution is clear (except to some on the Supreme Court and among Republicans):
there is and must always be a clear and concise separation of CHURCH and STATE!
We cannot bargain it away.
We cannot compromise.
We cannot let any of it begin.
But, (and that's no reference to your avatar!), the fight for women's rights could be/should be a way to assure the clear understanding and support of the constitution.
We can settle for no less........

(9,865 posts)...Schools are the thieves.
Needs to say "Governor vetoes theft of funds from public schools".
At least, I think so.
Great news though!

(430 posts)Maybe Public Schools aren't "The Thief" but they are definitely "a" thief (and most times need not be).
Having served on a school board and seen the BS, cronyism, backroom deals and capitulation to certain groups at the local tax payer's expense, I can emphatically say Public Schools definitely are as close to thievery as you can get.

(16,926 posts)you are applying to school boards.
You are correct - for some.
Sadly, perhaps, too many.
But, here again, it is up to the public to be active and involved in what is happening in their government - both locally, regionally, and nationally.
As an educator, both in the classroom and as an administrator, I've indeed seen the things you've mentioned. But, I've also see active, quality school boards consistently step up and do the "right thing" - politics be damned.
Not much different from what we're seeing in DC these days, is it?

(9,265 posts)Singlehandedly keeping PA from going full Alabama. If the eventual Dem nominee does not choose one of the other candidates as a running mate, Tom Wolf would be awesome. And wed win PA for sure.
