Trump Clarifies Foreign Intel Comments on Fox: 'You Have to Look at It' to 'Know if it's Bad'

By Aidan McLaughlin June 14th, 2019, 8:41 am

President Donald Trump offered a scattershot defense of his comments on accepting help from Russia in 2020 while appearing on Fox & Friends, claiming he would turn to the FBI after considering what was offered.

“First of all I don’t think anybody would present me with anything bad because they know how much I love this country,” Trump told Fox & Friends. “Of course, you have to look at it, because if you don’t look at it you’re not going to know if it’s bad — how are you going to know if it’s bad? But of course, you give it to the FBI or report to the attorney general or somebody like that.”

“How do you know it’s bad if you don’t listen to it,” Fox & Friends host Ainsley Earhardt agreed.

“I thought it was made clear,” Trump said of his initial comments, made in an interview with ABC News, which caused an uproar.

“I’d take it” Trump said this week when asked by ABC’s George Stephanopoulos if Russia again offered campaign help. He also said he wouldn’t necessarily tell the FBI about such outreach.

Fox & Friends host Brian Kilmeade, who chided Trump for his remarks on Thursday, made some attempt to press the president on taking help from foreign governments.

He's the guy at work who has to click the link in a suspicious email before alerting IT.

He assumes that he's the omnipotent arbiter of information, and goes from there. He deludes himself into thinking that he knows more than anyone else and doesn't need anyone to advise him. But his delusion is self-serving because he wants to know, first, if anything he hears from Putin or NK or China or the UAE or the Saudis can be used for his own benefit. If he reasons that he can, then the "intelligence" is good and he doesn't need to contact the FBI. And that means that he also doesn't need to inform the FBI of any quid pro quo because he knows that whatever he exchanges with a foreign entity is a fair price for what he received. It's a simple equation that tragically has nothing to do with national security or the safety of the nation. It has only to do with how activities benefit him. Everything else he does as president is a performance.

This is simple stuff, and it illustrates how well insulated he's designed his daily life, and how his cultist followers absorb all of his craziness as expressions of their own fears, inadequacies, and frustrations. The most serious tragedy of all is how he's terrified the GOP into silence-- except for people like McConnell, who believe that they still hold a degree of control over their own positions and careers. But folks like McConnell have situated themselves to receive untold millions in foreign money, crimes, political favors.
