No trip to Target this afternoon: their computers/cash registers are down all across the country

Customers across the country have reported that Target employees were advising them that the retailer’s payment system was down, causing long lines to form in many locations. Based on reports from social media, the outage began sometime early Saturday afternoon.

Consumers described hours-long lines and confusion in stores across the country, with some saying that Target employees had turned away customers for two hours.

Target did not immediately return a request for comment, but did confirm the outage in replies on social media. “We are aware of a systems issue in store and are working as quickly as possible to get this fixed,” the company said on its AskTarget Twitter account in response to customers from Nevada, Minnesota and Texas.

My autistic grandson is visiting and a favorite thing to do is visit the Target toy department. He’d have a complete meltdown.

It was isolated to one store. Nearby construction caused a transformer to blow and their backup generator failed to kick in.

As the lines grew along with everyone’s impatience I remembered I once bought something in the electronics area from a clerk with a handheld device. I hightailed my cart there and lucked out. He was there with his portable device and it worked. It was only working with debit cards but I had one. I got out with my purchase while everyone else waited for what turned out to be hours.

Stuff happens.
