There were at least 4 or 5 solid, impressive Democratic leaders who could have beaten Nixon in his 2nd run, according to the polls of the time. This was before Watergate happened of course, but Nixon really thought he might lose in 1972.

So what happened? Dirty tricks by the Repukes is what happened! At the time the Watergate break-in was considered a dirty trick because they tried to steal info from the Democratic Party headquarters in the Watergate Hotel. But there was so much more happening besides that. The major Dem leaders all dropped out one by one, and that was exactly what the Repukes wanted. At the disheveled Dem convention of 1972 they brokered a deal with George McGovern, who was Mr. Nobody from Nowhere. The real story is that the powerhouse Democratic leaders were all knocked out of their primary races (forced to drop out) by GOP dirty tricks.

We cannot ever take any Democratic lead for granted. The Repukes will find a way to cheat, because they always do cheat.
