Trump Says He Has Unlimited Power: The Constitution 'Allows Me To Do Whatever I Want'

President Donald Trump insisted in a recent interview that he chose not to "go around firing everybody" during the Russia investigation because it did not "work out too well" for President Richard Nixon, who resigned from office. He also said that the U.S. Constitution allows him to do "whatever I want."

Donald Trump insisted in a recent interview that he chose not to "go around firing everybody" during the Russia investigation because it did not "work out too well" for President Richard Nixon, who resigned from office. He also said that the U.S. Constitution allows him to do "whatever I want."

In an interview on ABC, host George Stephanopoulos noted that the special counsel's report said that Trump had ordered his White House counsel to fire Robert Mueller.

"Number one, I was never going to fire Mueller," Trump insisted. "I never suggested firing Mueller."

"That's not what [the special counsel] says," the ABC host interrupted.

"I don't care what he says," Trump snapped.

"Why would [the White House counsel] lie under oath?" Stephanopoulos wondered.

"Because he wanted to make himself look like a good person," Trump argued. "Number one, I didn't. He wasn't fired. But more importantly, Article II [of the Constitution] allows me to do whatever I want. Article II would have allowed me to fire him."

"I wasn't going to fire him," the president added. "You know why? Because I watched Richard Nixon go around firing people and that didn't work out too well."

9. Impeachment is also in Article 2 of the Constitution (Section 4).

I guess he didn't read that far down when he decided Article 2 gives him unlimited powers.

31. He's been thwarted several times by the courts, and Dems have only had a few months

in congress, and they are making progress - dozens of investigations are going on.

For example - there is no wall going up...

20. He is actually.

Until Congress stops him, Trump is absolutely a dictator. He had committed numerous crimes and no one to date had held him accountable. The attorney general is acting as Trumps personal defense lawyer. He has others preventing Congress from obtaining any information which could be used to impeach or investigate. I am not convinced that they will get it even if they open official impeachment proceedings.

Trump fancies himself above the law and that is exactly what he is at this time. I see no evidence that is going to change anytime soon. Our constitutional republic has become an honor system

24. What difference would that make?

The house can investigate him, they can vote for articles of impeachment, they can impeach him as the republicans did with Clinton, but he is NOT going to be removed from power or have his power curtailed as long as the Senate republicans are going to protect him. And they will continue to protect him. McConnell has stated that.

29. You think if AOC were Speaker, there would be 218 votes for an impeachment?

Can you say which Members who are currently not supporting impeachment who would support it under Speaker Ocasio-Cortez?

32. We wouldn't have a speaker with the experience that we do now.

Democrats elect their speakers on the basis of their leadership ability, their experience and their ability to work with people.

That's why freshmen don't get elected speaker, no matter their celebrity or twitter following.

11. So, who's countering trump's claim that he has unlimited power?

At the moment, effectively NOBODY. I've had it with faint-hearted Democratic leadership---we have an authoritarian madman in the White House, and we're not doing much of anything about it. Goddamn it, everybody wake the hell up! Pelosi and Schumer, if you're not up to a meaningful, out-and-out confrontation with trump, then get the fuck out of the way.

15. I think at minimal the impeachment process needs to be started/investigated. IMO the message being

sent, in general, is the actions of this ass in the WH are acceptable ... as his actions become normalized. Many Americans IMO have the attention span of a rock ... and I think many believe tRump is way off center, but his actions are possibly OK. If impeachment were begun, IMO, the general public would start to take significant interest.
