"SNIP.....
In Dubuque, Mr. Meier and his partner, Briana Moss, have knocked on 250 doors and gathered about 50 signatures over the past few months. About 20 volunteers, including a retired nurse and several college students, are also involved. Nationwide, canvassers have knocked on 20,000 doors and collected 14,000 signatures since February.
On a Saturday afternoon, Mr. Miller, a Vietnam veteran, told Mr. Meier about his positive experience with government health care through the Department of Veterans Affairs, saying, Ive seen how it can work.
A few houses down, a woman who owns a cleaning service and would give only her first name, Sharon, and her party affiliation, Republican, said that if the bill covered abortions, I wont go for that.
She added that she would be happy to stop paying $170 a month for supplemental insurance to cover what Medicare does not, but she did not want to see people who do not work receive free care. From the garage, her husband hollered that he agreed. Conceding defeat, Mr. Meier and Ms. Moss moved along.

(25,856 posts)Everyone should have at least basic health care.
I happen to be incredibly healthy. It would be so easy for me to dismiss those of less good health, to expect that others match my high standards. Nope. I recognize how different I am from so many, especially from those my age. (I'm 70). I'll admit that sometimes I'm astonished or disheartened that my age mates are not exactly like me, but in the end I come back to this: everyone deserves health care. Regardless.
I'll add this. I'm one of the passionate non-smokers and can come down very hard on smokers. However, even if you have a disease because of your smoking, you are no less deserving of health care than some fanatic who never smoked, always ate healthy whatever. Yeah, you should take better care of yourself but the crucial thing is that you deserve the same health care as anyone else.
Health care is a basic right. Period, end of discussion.
We'll work on stuff like persuading people not to smoke separately from providing health care.
