(115,686 posts)I bet he wouldn't say that if most voters in Puerto Rico and DC were Republicans; he'd welcome them with open arms. He's just throwing the term "socialism" around as another chunk of red meat for his ignorant base (and yet another reason Democrats should avoid the use of that word at all costs: Don't give the GOP any more opportunities for red-baiting).

(24,412 posts)They've all just decided that it sounds scary to the masses to stop anything we want to do. And as for SCOTUS, we are owed a seat due to the utter travesty of them outright stealing Scalia's vacant seat.

(15,805 posts)Puerto Rico. That's too much for an old racist like McConnell to swallow, besides they might be poor and live in impoverished communities that need a lot of federal aid and basic infrastructure development.
As a state, Republicans will not be able to deny them funds as easily as they've done to these special territories that have fewer rights. They cannot refuse to provide a wide range of social programs needed to set people on the road to recovery as full citizens.
Republicans have repeatedly shortchanged those areas and demonized those populations, is it any wonder that they tend to vote for Demcrats?

Maybe we could remove statehood from some sparsely populated regions like Wyoming, and achieve the same results.

(50,557 posts)So, what is it called when if you took the population of every two-GOP-senator state minus Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Arizona and combined them, they still wouldn't match the population of California...but those fifteen very red states have a total of 30 senators...and California has two?
