Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWhat would the US do if Iran shot down a US passenger jet and killed 300 innocent people?
Do you think we'd go to war - even if Iran said it was just an awful mistake?
Probably.
If we're willing to nearly go to war over a fucking drone - could you imagine 300 Americans losing their lives to an Iranian missile as it took down, say, a United Airlines plane?
Pretty crazy, right?
Surely something like that would lead to all out war - surely, right?
Surely...
Oh, that's right. Something like this DID happen. In 1988. The US literally blew up an Iranian passenger jet.
Was that an act of war on the US' part?
Isn't it crazy how double standards work when you're as powerful of a nation as the United States?
Pitiful.

(1,440 posts)Not starting a war with the US isn't a sign of good will and peace. It's a sign of self-preservation.
Iran committed an act of piracy, caught on tape, and now they're deliberately provoking the US in order to sow strife and weaken our international alliances. It's pretty fucked up how people are carrying water for a brutal theocracy.

(37,163 posts)Reagan publicly winked and nodded to Alex-Jones-level conspiracy theories that the Iranians did have a warplane lock on to USS Vincennes, but also had loaded the plane full of already-dead people and crashed it to make us look bad.
We admitted it to the extent that a USN cruiser fired a missile at an aircraft and an airliner went down. We "expressed deep regret over the loss of life caused by this incident" but never formally apologized or acknowledged wrongdoing.
The restitution was agreed to 8 years and 2 presidents after the incident.

(5,476 posts)Not so much double standards or being the most powerful army in the world, more an unshakable conviction that the US is right, has the moral high ground, God is on their side, has the best type of government, and is the world's policeman who needs to barge in whenever Wrongdoers rear their ugly heads, anywhere in the world.
But judging others as inferior and needing intervention based on your own moral and ethical standards is a two edged sword.
Most nations watching on the periphery don't condone the heavy handed Eagle-of-War Diplomacy the US constantly uses. Those on the receiving end of the heavy handed treatment develop strong resentment, and at times, a need for revenge.
9/11 had lessons to teach in it's aftermath. Message not received, message not understood.
The US will (probably) go to war with Iran. The current internal Iranian political power structure will (probably) be demolished.
What will replace it will (probably) be worse.

By the way the vulgarity with this one is too much for me. They false charge last week about an Iranian attack on two ships blew up in their face because it was amateur - there is no way Iran would attack a Japanese ship while the Japanese PM was visiting Iran.
The US is trying to start a war with Iran. This non-stop terror promoted by the world's worst bully is not fair to the rest of the planet.
Stop these madmen.
