SALT LAKE CITY, Utah The lunch rush at St. Vincent de Paul Dining Hall is a snapshot of the changing character of American homelessness.
The first thing that strikes you is the sheer number of people the soup kitchen serves. The line outside starts forming two hours before the food is ready. Diners file in, eat quickly and get up as soon as theyre finished. They know someone is waiting outside for their seat.

if the purpose of an economy is not to provide the citizens with homes, clothing, and food it is not serving its purpose and must be replaced.

(5,240 posts)apartment complex was built to supply housing for some of the homeless families. Since the complex has been occupied crime in the area has gone way up. There have been daylight break ins, car jackings, armed robberies, gunshots. The recent crimes have been traced back to residents of the complex and visitors. The decent families in the complex have also been victimized. You can't just assume that all people who have living on the streets are going to successfully transition to apartment living. People who own homes in the area have seen their property values drop and businesses have had to hire fulltime security. I am not sure what the answer is.
