Homeless young father shamed by nosy woman on social media for sleeping between shifts at McDonald's

I hope this woman feels like the gum on the bottom of my shoe. What is astonishing is that after she complained to the supervisors and they told her they were OK with him sleeping in the booth, she was not ok with their answer and went ahead and posted the picture on social media. But her evil deed lead to the community rallying to his aid. Americans still care about one another.

A nosy woman not minding her business posted a picture shaming a McDonald’s worker for sleeping in a booth before reporting him to his superiors.

But what Nosy Nancy didn’t know is that the man was getting some shut-eye between shifts since he’s homeless.

Simon Childs says he was hurt that he was put on blast when a woman posted his picture on social media and complained about the sleeping employee at the Fayette County, Georgia fast-food restaurant.

Now the community has rallied behind homeless dad and donations have poured from complete strangers who are giving him clothes for his kid and contributions for him to get a hotel room, WSBTV reports.

“I’ve been going through a hard time with my mom passing,” Childs told the outlet on Monday.

“Everything I do, I want to work for it,” the 21-year-old father said. He’s on his own and raising a young son.

But in just a matter of days, the tables turned in his favor. He came to work and was flooded with support from people donating diapers for his son, clothes and plenty of supplies.

I’m always amazed how those who deem themselves the Planet Police lack simple kindness.

Hooray for the community.

she sounded / sounds like one of those entitled Karens in You Tube that don't care about anyone else but themselves. This is a good thing that happened to this 21 year kid...you would think Nosy Nancy would have tried doing something for this kid but instead bitched.

during the day, the homeless would be in the library--enjoying the heat in the Wisconsin winter and the A/C in the 80+ summer. Two blocks away, there was a 24-hour gas station that served hot coffee and allowed the folks to occupy the 2 booths inside. The coffee was free to them and none of the privileged townsfolk raised a fuss.

The kicker was that this town voted solid GOP, but didn't care because nothing came out of their pockets.

instead of the nonpublic quiet shame that most everyone seems okay with foisting on our homeless population.

Are the people helping him because they see someone in need and want to help, or has his public shaming exposed their own complicity in an evil system and by sending some diapers or money to a gofundme, do you feel their hands are now washed?

I don't know the answer, but it's a question that has to be asked.

One thing I hate about these stories is that the media gets all up on the "good samaritan" angle and comoetey ignores the justice issue of - "Holy shit! Why do we have a homeless father? What the fuck is wrong with our country that this is a thing? Why do expect McDonald's management to give the guy a place to sleep and strangers to send donations - why aren't We the People taking care of our neighbors BEFORE they fall into homelessness and charity cases?"

That's what irritates me about these stories.

Another thing that upsets me about these stories is that, and I'm not faulting the guy, but he gives a nod to the nosy nancy, as in, without her, I wouldn't have gotten any help. It reminds me of a similar occurence when a person is bullied and has to deal with it, sometimes for years, and then someone says that you can thank your bully for making you a stronger person. I was bullied all during high school. Did I learn to cope? Yes, mostly by building a wall around myself which shut out more peers than I should have. It created an isolation. I won't thank them just because I learned to survive their cruelty.

Kids can be tough. Some of the bullies from your high school have matured and stopped being jerks, others haven’t and are now Trump supporters.

They bullied you because you were different from them in some way, but not being like them is what makes you you. The coping mechanisms you develop can have lasting results, though. I hope you’re okay now. I think a lot of us here on DU who are independent thinkers may have similar stories, with incidents of bullying, intimidation and isolation in our past. It’s easier to go along with the bullies and not care about anything than it is to be a compassionate person who thinks for him or herself.

many people make this same argument on a regular basis. My own mother told me I turned out to be the strongest of her kids because she let me sink or swim. No, mom, it's called neglect and I'm not going to thank you for it.

Like the poster above says, I'm all for helping people but I do wish we'd look at the reasons why we wait to help until it's on social media. (I mean people in general)

This young father is homeless, AND he is working--multiple shifts at McDonald's. He is working hard, but his wages aren't enough for him to afford housing for him and his child.

And as a country we are all gooey about the gofundme page, but we don't have the national will to ensure a living wage for workers. Instead we shame the poor--they are lazy, etc.

It's a bit like the gooey way we get when there is a fundraiser for a family facing a health catastrophe. Who are we as a nation? As individuals we can be kind, but our national policies -- yikes.

This! I am glad that his story turned out to be a happy one, but what is wrong with us as a nation when someone can work around the clock and still not be able to afford to put a roof over their head or properly care for their only child?

Our priorities a nation are completely out of whack. Something needs to be done to insure that everyone who works can afford shelter, food and a basic standard of living. The cost of living is just insane these days.
