Epstein will be charged with one count of sex trafficking of minors and one count of conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking of minors—which could put him away for a maximum of 45 years. The case is being handled by the Public Corruption Unit of the Southern District of New York, with assistance from the district's human-trafficking officials and the FBI.

And would certainly have been easier than letting them bring charges and THEN quashing them.

This suggests that SDNY may be operating with some degree of Independence. But time will tell.

It appears to involve activity in multiple states and internationally. It's just the kind of case federal prosecutors would normally take. But we are now in a different time and place and it's hard to trust the feds - not because the line prosecutors are corrupt, but their bosses are.

I'm hoping that means SDNY is operating with some autonomy. But there could be another reason they allowed him to be charged.

We'll find out eventually, maybe when the indictment's unsealed.

They've got a Dem - maybe Bill Clinton or some major NY political figure - in their crosshairs. The old "both sides do it don't trust anyone" game.
This may also be a move to inoculate Drumphf by charging Epstein's many associates under such a broad brush they charge those who didn't participate in the the pedophilia and could prove it, throwing any evidence concerning Drumphf into question - so they think

I was hoping it was the State of New York bringing the charges. I don't trust the timing or the SDNY.
