And look at the way we aided right wing coups in South America.
They are lawless in many places because of us.

(1,296 posts)One of the excellent reasons to emigrate to the colonies was the fact that cities like London were overrun with diseases, many of which were spread by poor sanitation and lack of sewers.

(8,709 posts)In fact, experts estimate that over 52,000 British prisoners were shipped off to colonial America.
Many Australians have more or less embraced their convict history. But if youre an American who had no idea that your countrys founding included a huge prison population, youre not alone. Historically, Americans have not been too keen on discussing the fact that convicts came to what would eventually become known as the United States.

because of the overwhelming number of poor people in England. I'd been corrected by Georgians before that the idea was over ruled early on and the first colonists were regular poor working class people. But then eventually debtors and convicts were sent to Georgia.

Reminds me of a graphic novel I came across a few years ago whose author is African-American and Swedish-American. His Swedish descent mom knew nothing of her family history. The author, Eric Basir, found out about a game show inviting American Swedes to come and play and they'd research their genealogy and take them to their ancestors' estates, homes or hovels.
Just saying that a lot of this particular group's ancestry is tragic. One emigrated for ruining his family's name by stealing a bag of nails, tenet farmers sending 5 year olds away by themselves hoping for adoption in the Swedish-American community, another left his starving family so as not to be burden them.
So many left because of unimaginable brutally devastating conditions. My late MIL's ancestry were Spanish conversos who left because of the Inquisition.
I couldn't help laughing though reading your ancestor beat the crap out of a nobleman

(8,709 posts)Besides religion this article covers: "Social, political, and economic inequality due to feudalism; Fragile food supply and famine; Poor health and the spread of infectious diseases; Uncertain economy; Overpopulation; Dangerous standards of living in urban and rural areas; Child victimization; Intolerance; Warfare; An idealistic image of the New World.
Our story begins in 15th and early 16th century Europe - with an undertanding of the English who eventually decide to immigrate to the New World."

(5,395 posts)But honestly, mass migrations have been part of human history for a long time - escaping religious persecution, wars, economic factors, etc.
It's how humanity spread across the globe.
But pilgrim fathers = good, brown people from the South = bad?
The whole paperwork thing is just a recent thing, and an excuse to lock people out.
Is it 'No Room for you!' or 'You are not White, go away!' ??
