Kyoto Animation studio fire: 12 dead after arson attack in Japan

An arson attack on an anime studio in Japan has left at least 12 people dead and dozens injured.

The perpetrator, who was also injured and has been taken into police custody, walked into the 1st Studio building of Kyoto Animation in Uji, Kyoto prefecture at about 10.30am. He poured what is suspected to be petrol in multiple areas of the building before igniting it.

There were more than 70 people were in the building, which is Kyoto Animation’s main studio, and 12 people died, according to the police.

The suspect, identified only as a 41-year-old male, was reportedly taken to hospital before being arrested by police, who said he had admitted starting the fire. No motive for the arson attack has been reported, but Japan’s public broadcaster said he had shouted “drop dead” as he set the fires.

The death toll is over two dozen, with dozens more injured in an arson attack. Maybe wait a bit before jumping right in with random speculation, perhaps?

There hasn't been a statement from police, but some of the witnesses said the guy was ranting about something stolen from him.

Hell, wouldn't those sites be for people outside Japan? And why would a foaming horndog target Kyoto Animation? They don't do porn. Their stock in trade is the equivalent of Young Adult fiction.

The arsonist is a foaming nutjob, but howz about waiting for some facts before deciding what kind of foaming nutjob he is?

Sweet freakin criminy.

What you referenced is like saying someone threw a bomb at disney, but hey, there's this scuffle between porn companies over here and that's why it happened.

I'd recommend you delete and really think about what you posted because it's pretty fucking disgusting and pretty sexist considering the number of female members that FAKKU has among their membership.

KYOTO--Thirty-three people were killed and 17 others remain hospitalized after a suspected arsonist set fire to a three-story animation studio here on July 18, police and fire department officials said. Some of the 36 people injured in the fire were unconscious, according to Kyoto prefectural police.

The studio, operated by Kyoto Animation Co., is located in a residential area in Kyoto’s Fushimi Ward about 100 meters north of Rokujizo Station on Keihan Electric Railway Co.’s Uji Line. There were about 70 people in the studio at the time.

As [a witness] waited for an ambulance, a number of police officers surrounded the [suspected arsonist] and peppered him with questions about how he entered the studio and why he set it on fire, she said. The woman said she could not catch much of what the man said, but she did clearly hear him shout, “They ripped me off.”

Kyoto Animation has produced a number of popular TV anime series, such as “K-On!,” “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya” and “Sound! Euphonium.” Although many major animation companies are located in the Tokyo area, Kyoto Animation has kept its base of operations in the ancient capital since its founding in 1981 because the city has accumulated a long cultural history, company officials said.

For those unfamiliar with their work, it's the sort of stuff that in the US is called "young adult fiction": high school clubs, bands, sports teams, etc., sometimes having a goal, sometimes just goofing around with friends, occasionally with supernatural or sci-fi stuff mixed in.
