(102,408 posts)late teen, early adult "angst" that translates to this "modern-day conspiracy theorist" crap, really doesn't materialize in young men-- focused on the far more immediate and important issues. Same as cultures that mark entering adulthood a difficult and sometimes life-threatening survival challenge.
At least this is what the sociologists tell me.
I wish they had more explanation for how this young man ended up like this.

(4,379 posts)There are a lot of people in this country that need to be punched in the face. Buzz did the right thing and he is 89 years old. I love that guy.

(5,152 posts)I am very disturbed by this post. How is this better than the MAGAs'?
Why do we criticize violence on the right and support this? Yes these people are unreasonable
and frustrating, but violence is not how we deal with them.

(6,941 posts)We hate it, but wars break out. We must use violence to repel the aggressors.
Someone attacks our spouse, family, friends, children-we use physical violence to intervene.
A wild boar attacks us while sleeping in our backyard tent-we use violence to defend our life
But the point of glorifying violence is valid, just not applicable in this case. Aldrin is repelling against an aggression, just a bit overwhelmingly.
Im not gonna judge him by the same standards as a MAGA who drives his car into a crowd of protestors. No comparison.

(12,600 posts)As an aside, did you know Buzz Aldrin's father -- who had been lobbying hard to have his son leave the LEM first -- criticized his son for not being the first person to set foot on the moon? It had been a pattern in their relationship -- nothing that Buzz did was ever good enough for his father.
NASA had selected Armstrong because they wanted the first step to be made by a civilian astronaut, and not one affiliated with the military. Also, Neil was known for being a modest and humble man, while Aldrin was considered to be a brilliant but troubled loner who did not work well with others. (See, those comments on your elementary school report cards eventually come back to haunt you.)
As the highest paid astronaut, Armstrong made $27,401 a year (about $191,000 in today's dollars). Break it down, and he was paid about $33 an hour ($233 in 2019) for the two hours and 40 minutes he spent walking on the moon.

(4,379 posts)That guy did what he did because he had no fear Buzz would do anything. Do you believe that guy will walk up to Buzz again and insult him?I don't think so. That was not violence, that was justice being served. That was a good old American attitude adjustment.
Thank you!

(1,723 posts)His mother said he would be in trouble if ever got in a fight, so the bullying continued. Finally when it was just his father witnessing the bullying (calling him names and trying to goad him into a fight), he said "Son, step over that line."
He did.
Fists flew.
The bullying and goading ceased.
I also do not like violence. I was never in a fight as a kid (or adult), but the mentality of a bully requires a response that will stop it. Hopefully, it need not be violence, but the bully need to be stopped.
How about Trump and McConnell (not using violence, of course)? It needs to stop. Stop the bully and maybe we stop the bully imitators.

(50,566 posts)Here's the scenario: Sibrel was making a "documentary" called A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Moon, where he would approach the astronauts and demand they put their hands on a Bible and swear they went to the moon. As part of it, he lured Buzz Aldrin to a hotel to, supposedly, give an interview about space to a Japanese children's television show. There was no Japanese children's television show, just Sibrel and his camera crew who ambushed Buzz with this bullshit. Buzz flattened his ass. Sibrel tried to use the video to charge Aldrin with assault; the prosecutor watched the video and told Sibrel he got what was coming to him.

NO!!!! These assholes do what they do because they havent been stopped. They havent had to face co sequences or pay a price or a penalty for their shitty attitudes and shitty prejudices and shitty willful ignorance. And theyll keep doing it as long as they arent forced to pay for it. Guaranteed. Goes double, triple, quadruple, and more, for trump.

(52,352 posts)Stupid, insulting, disrespectful words in no way justifies physical violence, no matter how often Hollywood reinforces that crap. You walk away or you give them a piece of your mind, but you do not throw the first punch, period.
But defrauding someone to get them to a different location is a vastly different thing than merely talking smack.
The punchee, in this case, crossed the line first imho.
In fact I'm surprised the prosecutor didn't find something to charge *him* with.

Aldrin is 89 now, would have been 72 in 2002, but it's still impressive to punch a younger guy out like that.

(1,639 posts)Yeah, I kinda let out a little laugh when I saw the punch. However, I do agree with some of the other posters when they say that violence is not the answer.
Then I do a little rationalization math in my mind. Puncher is 89 years old. Punchee literally towers over puncher. Punchee not only insulted Puncher but actively deceived him. (Thanks to Poster who filled in the backstory information.)
Puncher didn't stab or shoot Punchee or cause any serious harm. Puncher did committ legal definition of assault--despite being an American Hero.
Perhaps the judge should have given the Puncher some form of legal punishment such as a day in jail where he could relate his tale to other inmates. Knowing who he is, even the most hardened inmates would have not messed with him. Instead, they might have applauded. Puncher could have been required to do at least one community service function. He could have been "made" to speak to a group of people--just like the Punchee lied about--and fielded legitimate questions about the scientific challenges of landing on the moon. He could have say, "Folks, this is the sort of stuff you need to say to moon-landing deniers instead of punching them."
Then everyone could applaud, even for mixed reasons. 'Cause not being perfect is different from being an asshole.
George II
(67,782 posts)But even at 72 years old that was great. Puncher first said "get this guy away from me", the punchee still moved in and got in his face. As a public figure, puncher could be justified in defending himself, not knowing what the punchee might have done next.
Collimator
(1,639 posts)Puncher was 72 years old. Punchee was still a punk in his physical "prime" who looked to be a full foot taller than Puncher.
For some reason, seeing someone smaller and supposedly more vulnerable take down someone larger and clearly more obnoxious is inherently funny. Still mixed feelings.
