he thought were his friends - he's not going to run against either incumbent Senator. But whichever Democrat wins the presidential election could appoint Klobuchar to the AG position (she's not likely to get the nomination or the running mate position), which would open up her Senate seat. The governor of MN, a Democrat, could appoint Franken to fill that seat.

in their party. If Franken gets back to the Senate he would be one of the most junior Senators (and would be junior even to his replacement, Tina Smith). So the chances of that happening are approximately zero. However, I do think we can do better than Schumer.

I don't want to say how long I've thought that. Now, of course, I believe it more strongly.

Franken could be named Speaker of the House without being an elected representative.

from the article:

Drew Littman, Franken’s first chief of staff, told me, “People said he didn’t have to do it, but he’s so social—his nerves are exposed all the time. It was like going to school and thinking these people are your friends and they really like you, and then one day they all get together and beat you up. You don’t want to go back to that school after that.” Norman Ornstein, Franken’s friend, said, “It was no more a choice than jumping after they make you walk the plank.”

Amy Klochabar either wins the presidency or whoever else does names her to his/her cabinet.

The Minnesota governor then fills the empty seat with Franken.

If Klobuchar and Smith want to stay in the Senate he will not challenge them. If either decides not to run again, he could run for that spot, or if Klobuchar is appointed to a cabinet position the governor could appoint him to the open seat. But he won't run against a current Democratic senator.
