I'm serious. I want him back in.

(116,472 posts)he thought were his friends - he's not going to run against either incumbent Senator. But whichever Democrat wins the presidential election could appoint Klobuchar to the AG position (she's not likely to get the nomination or the running mate position), which would open up her Senate seat. The governor of MN, a Democrat, could appoint Franken to fill that seat.

(116,472 posts)in their party. If Franken gets back to the Senate he would be one of the most junior Senators (and would be junior even to his replacement, Tina Smith). So the chances of that happening are approximately zero. However, I do think we can do better than Schumer.

(7,462 posts)Franken could be named Speaker of the House without being an elected representative.

Drew Littman, Frankens first chief of staff, told me, People said he didnt have to do it, but hes so socialhis nerves are exposed all the time. It was like going to school and thinking these people are your friends and they really like you, and then one day they all get together and beat you up. You dont want to go back to that school after that. Norman Ornstein, Frankens friend, said, It was no more a choice than jumping after they make you walk the plank.

(116,472 posts)On the other hand, it might be a pretty satisfying screw-you to Gillibrand and a few others.

(32,132 posts)I could see him as the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, among others. He'd also make a great Press Secretary, or maybe Chief of Staff.

The Minnesota governor then fills the empty seat with Franken.

(39,343 posts)He cannot claim that he did not. He shouldn't have resigned or been forced out. Once you do that, you're professional political career is over.

(116,472 posts)If Klobuchar and Smith want to stay in the Senate he will not challenge them. If either decides not to run again, he could run for that spot, or if Klobuchar is appointed to a cabinet position the governor could appoint him to the open seat. But he won't run against a current Democratic senator.
