Those Tiny Hotel Shampoo Bottles May Soon Be A Thing Of The Past

One of the largest hotel groups in the world announced on Tuesday that it will begin phasing out single-use toiletry products in an effort to reduce plastic waste ― and it’s not alone in making the switch.

InterContinental Hotels Group ― which owns more than 5,600 hotels under such brands as Holiday Inn, Regent, Intercontinental, Kimpton and Crowne Plaza ― said it will swap out bathroom miniatures for bulk-size, refillable amenities by 2021.

This will eliminate an average of 200 million nonreusable tiny toiletries from its hotels annually, the company said. “Switching to larger-size amenities across more than 5,600 hotels around the world is a big step in the right direction and will allow us to significantly reduce our waste footprint and environmental impact as we make the change,” said IHG CEO Keith Barr.

Marriott International last spring announced that it would swap out mini bath bottles for wall-mounted dispensers in 450 of its hotels within five brands. The change wasn’t expected to save the company much money ― about $2,000 a hotel a year ― but it would eliminate 10.3 million bottles annually, or 113,000 pounds of plastic, The Wall Street Journal reported at the time.

Bring my tiny bottles to bring home some of those fabulous-smelling shampoos and soaps. I really like items in the Thann line.

Microscopic bars of soap barely get you through one shower. Bar of soap doubles as shampoo.

I just bought my daughter one of these at Target today:

Hotels providing mini French milled face bar for the sink and a bath soap bar and a mini shampoo bar for the shower.

At least there's no plastic waste to these. I've never actually seen shampoo bars, though. Who sells these?

Those mini milled hotel bath soaps are only 1/4 of an inch thick and slightly concave to reduce the product.

When shopping, the boxes are small, so they are easily overlooked.

has full size shampoo, conditioner and body wash. Too large for airport carry on, and I presume they refill them. Didn't bother me but wonder if that's "legal"?

i have a grocery bag full of toiletries from hotels. I donate them to the homeless shelter. however, i support this. i can't recall what hotel it was, but i have stayed in at least one in which the soap and shampoo were in dispensers. didn't bother me.

I travel a ton, so I switched to bars for everything. I don't love bar conditioners, but you know what? At this point I'll just be happy if I have a planet to inhabit when I'm 60 (I'm 41 now). If my hair's a little dry, whatever.
