El Paso shooting being investigated as domestic terrorism and possible hate crime

Authorities are investigating a racist, anti-immigrant screed that they believe was posted by a man who opened fire at a shopping center in El Paso, Texas, on Saturday.

Twenty people were killed and 26 people were injured when the gunman, identified by three sources as Patrick Crusius, a 21-year-old white man from Allen, Texas, began shooting just after 10:30 a.m.

About 20 minutes earlier, a post on the online message board 8chan believed to be from the suspect laid out a dark vision of America overrun by Hispanic immigrants. The 2,300-word document, which police called a "manifesto," was attached to a post that said, "I'm probably going to die today."

The writing is filled with white nationalist language and racist hatred toward immigrants and Latinos, blaming immigrants and first-generation Americans for taking away jobs.

Although authorities are still investigating the suspect's connection to the document, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott called the shooting a "hate crime" during an evening press briefing, and the FBI has also opened a domestic terrorism investigation into the massacre, a source familiar with the investigation process said Saturday.

This seems to contradict an earlier post. Maybe the authorities decided they need to get off their ass and do something more than thoughts and prayers.

A Twitter account bearing the suspect’s name contains liked tweets that include a “BuildTheWall” hashtag, a photo using guns to spell out “Trump,” and posts from Paul Joseph Watson, a far-right Youtuber who works with Alex Jones at Infowars.

Authorities are examining a four-page document that several media outlets are calling a manifesto. Authorities are trying to determine the document’s authenticity and whether there are ties to the suspect.

The document mentions the suspect in the Christchurch, New Zealand mass shooting at two mosques that left 51 people dead in March. The suspect in that shooting has pleaded not guilty.

There are no statutes on our books that define domestic terrorism. It is of itself not a crime. Timothy McVeigh was not charged with terrorism, nor was the maniac Coast Guard officer that wanted to murder all the Dems in Congress.
