El Paso hospital official: There was "an absence of empathy" on Trump's part

A hospital official familiar with the President's trip to University Medical Center cautioned that some of those patients did not want to meet with anybody because of their current condition.

"Some people didn't want any visitors. Some didn't want to meet [Trump]," the official said, adding that the patients who survived the El Paso shooting are undergoing an enormous ordeal.

The official confirmed that one of the two patients who were brought back to the hospital to meet with Trump was two-month-old Paul Gilbert who lost both his parents in the shooting. His relatives brought him back to the hospital and met with both Trump and first lady Melania Trump.

The official went on to say that there was a general assessment that there was "an absence of empathy" on Trump's part. When asked whether that was a fair assessment, the official said that was "accurate." Trump made other comments, like his remarks about former Rep. Beto O'Rourke, the official said, that left the impression that the President was not as focused on consoling the patients as might be expected.

...there weren't any aftershocks like the Trump visit, and (to my knowledge) there weren't any videos of him bragging about crowd size and slamming elected officials.

I don't say that to praise Bush...he blew it, he knew it, he did damage control. All I'm saying is that I don't remember multiple blowbacks about how inappropriately he behaved once he landed.

Bush took a lot of deserved critism for how he handled Katrina but even he wasn't as bad as trump. I don't remember Bush bashing state and local officials either. His supporters in and out of the government did that for him. Looking back on it, I think Bush was more clueless than evil. Not that that excused him.

When Bush's handlers told him to do something, for the most part, he did it without going off script.

Now, that's not a noble quality. I'm not trying to imply that it is. Bush was arrogant and loved playing that manufactured "Texas" persona to the hilt. He added statements like "I'm the decider" and "catapulting the propaganda" to his "greatest hits."

The point I'm trying to make here, which may be getting lost in the translation, is that Trump goes through the same process...he puts his foot in his mouth, he makes a bonehead move, his handlers start spinning damage control, and he follows their script...right up to the point where he resents following the script, then he ad-libs, goes off script, and turns the damage control into a piece of swiss cheese.

Maybe it's because Bush had a father figure that he respected constantly on the sidelines. The Trump parental dynamic was closer to Oedipus than it was to Ozzie and Harriet.

Bush was a dick, and he had filters, and for the most part, the filers kicked in after he fucked up and his handlers called him on it.

Trump has no filters. His concept of right and wrong is that he's right, and if you agree with him, you're right too, and if you don't, you're wrong. And every time he tries to conform to his handlers' concept of "optics." he chews through the leash.

1/ Generated a climate of hatred and anger towards Mexican immigrants.

2/ Singled out El Paso to hold a hate-filled rally.

3/ Blocked the FBI and DHS from prioritizing white supremacist domestic terrorism.

4/ With Massacre Mitch, blocked the Democrat gun bill from moving forward.

5/ Continued to undermine healthcare access (including mental health) with Texas having the highest uninsured rate in the nation.

they're kind of ground zero for it, to the extent the insurance companies don't "corporatize" them.

No surprise to anyone who has been paying attention.

he just doesn't have feelings. these people who survive will never be the same. who knows what their injuries are...

he just can't even imagine what they are going through and the ripple effect it has on each survivor and their families and friends and co-workers.

He thinks it's over.
