Cops wrongly claimed 'bird poop' was cocaine in arrest of Georgia Southern QB

Cocaine charges and a team suspension for Georgia Southern quarterback Shai Werts were dropped Friday when lab tests confirmed what Werts said when he was arrested: The white substance on his car was bird poop, not cocaine.

Werts was pulled over on Jul. 31 and charged with speeding and cocaine possession. Despite the extreme implausibility of powder cocaine just sitting comfortably on the hood of a car going 80 mph, police and media outlets acted like it was Werts who had the ridiculous story, not the cops who confused bird poop and cocaine. Headlines, written mostly by idiots, took the cocaine theory at face value. As of Friday afternoon, few retractions had been made.

This was always a straightforward case: A bird pooped on Werts’ car, and a moron cop decided the crap was coke. Georgia Southern’s student newspaper viewed video of the arrest, and quoted the following exchange from it:

Browder [the officer]: “What’s that white stuff on your hood, man?”
Werts: “Bird s--t."
“That ain’t bird s--t.”
“I promise you, that’s bird doo doo.”
“I promise you, it’s not though.”
“I swear to God, that’s bird doo doo.”
“I swear to God, it’s not. I just tested it and it turned pink (for cocaine).”

South Carolina prosecutors said Thursday that actual lab testing found no drugs, dropping charges against Werts.

Thanks to the young man’s integrity, he pulled through safely.

I wonder how many lighter flesh-tone QBs have been treated as criminals for bird poop?

I'm glad to hear that the field test was false.

Whoever makes the field tests need to be held accountable.

I forget which state it was of the two. When he told them it was a Boston Fern, they laughed and made him wait overnight in jail until a university botanist could come to examine the plant. He was told to stay quiet when they processed him out.

Cops mistook the powdered sugar from a donut on her clothing as cocaine.
She was jailed until lab tests proved her right.
