I used to like Cenk. I have had reason to question him and his REAL viewpoints for some time now. That he named the show after the political movement that led to Armenia genocide is obviously one reason for that. Most Americans will never connect the two, however.

The term "Young Turk" is now used generally to denote a member of an insurgent group within an organization (often, although not always, a political party) advocating change, sometimes radical change, in that organization.

He use to be a RepubliCON too. But anyone can change their mind and come on over to the side of progress.
As a young man, Cenk sounded like a bit of a douche. But we all have made mistakes especially as a younger person.

Watching that video where she tries to just wave it all away, describing the ongoing pain of Armenians as "stupid" that they should just get over (when the official Turkish governmental stance continues to be denial) shows how very immature she continues to be. Ah, youth. Everything before your own birth is SOOOO unimportant and we should all just "get over it" ...
So, no, I don't take that she's Armenian as indicative of anything except she may well be as ignorant of her own ancestral history as Cenk is determined to deny his.
Sort of like saying the Kardashians, whose father was 3rd generation Armenian are advocates.

(18,319 posts)A freshmen Armenian Students Association member Ara Mandjikian asked the following question during the event: In the U.S., there have been many instances of censorship. But, in the past as well there have also been incidents where a minority voice was silenced due to popular appeal such as the Young Turks in the Ottoman Empire. Dont you think naming a news organization after fascists who committed genocide compromises your ability to comment on censorship and social justice in general?
Kasparian had a generic response that would please audience members that were not familiar with the nuance of naming an organization The Young Turks. Our members were eager to approach her during the meet and greet after she preached about the necessity for open dialogue but Mrs. Kasparian left right when the event ended. How can someone speak so sincerely about progressivism and the need for freedom of speech but not be able to confront issues such as these? the statement continued.
The Young Turks is a media outlet that has had a cloudy history of refraining to touch upon the issue of the Armenian Genocide. Although the companys founders have denied any linkage to the names historical significance, Cenk Uygur had published a college article denying the Armenian genocide. As a co-founder of The Young Turks, Uygur created the company during a time when he publicly denied the Armenian Genocide. How can an organization such as The Young Turks be committed to social justice and progressive issues but not understand the highly offensive nature of their name? The answer is simple, The Young Turks do not care about offending Armenians, the student group said.
The Armenian Students Association at UCLA said that it is disappointed that organizations on campus do not consider all details when hosting events such as these on campus. The Armenian Students Association at UCLA is one of the most active cultural organizations on campus and they have a long history as an organization. The organization hosts several educational workshops each and every year on the Armenian Genocide. These events are always open to the public and serve to educate all members of the community. The organization will continue to fight discrimination and genocide denial as members of the Armenian Diaspora, said the statement.

which is why I could never watch TYT, even with his Armenian equivalent of an Uncle Tom next to him. And, no, I wont move on. My husband and I have both passed on the stories of the horrors our families endured during those years to our children in the hopes that they will remember their history and call out people like Cenk and his sell-out sidekick.

(4,613 posts)they would remember that it all occurred because of the Armenian people aiding and abetting the enemy against the Turks during WWI. Actions have consequences.

(4,238 posts)To justify the murder, rape and torture of millions of people, for any reason, let alone a false one, is disgusting. For the record, my family is Assyrian, so even if your premise was correct (and it isn't) why were Assyrians and Pontic Greeks targeted for extermination?
These communities were targeted because of their religious affiliations. Your justification is no different than those who blame the Holocaust on Jews for not being sufficiently German, or the caging of children because "their parents brought them here illegally."
SoCalNative
(4,613 posts)just that there's more than one issue at work as to why events happened the way that they did.

(4,238 posts)that the genocide campaign against the Armenian/Assyrian/Pontic Greeks by the Turks was rooted in centuries-old resentments of their Christian population, combined with the suspicion that they were sympathetic to the Allies. The war gave them the excuse they needed to rid themselves of an indigenous population that were on that land before the Ottomans raped and pillaged their way from Central Asia.
BuddhaGirl
(3,609 posts)It's just like eissa said - the Ottoman Turks had resentments of and suspicions against their Christian minority populations.
Before the genocide, the Turks rounded up and harassed and "disappeared" Armenian intellectual leaders in Istanbul. My ex's grandfather and uncle were among them.
Hitler was reported to have drawn inspiration from the Genocide.

(25,551 posts)Being a non-citizen in the Ottoman Empire kinda sucked.
The massacres of Armenians began in 1895 in Cilicia.
Reforms were started, but fell apart in 1909. There was a bounty on my great grandfather in 1909 and many Amenian men because they supported the reforms. But the reforms and any progress were halted. My great grandfather and grandfather came to the US b4 WW1 in 1909 and 1913. So did many Armenian men.
The genocide target women and children. Ask my family.

(11,949 posts)Im not talking about the Armenian genocide, which deserves way more attention and while on a smaller scale ranks up with the Holocaust.
Im taking about TYTs. They have no power in this nation. You think the average Democratic Primary voter has ever even heard of them? Or even most dialed in voters? Their fans will not be voting Democratic anyway. Ignore them.

(18,319 posts)when he suggested she conduct the investigation into Epstein's suicide, at least in part, because she would be willing to see if "the Clintons" were involved in his death. Cenk seems very comfortable speaking for the Democratic congresswoman.
Whos doing the investigation? AOC, Uygur said, adding You might be thinking what?'
He then mentioned that Ocasio-Cortez had already tweeted about the case, writing We need answers. Lots of them.
Thats true and everybody is saying the same thing, again left and right, in this case it doesn'tt matter, Uygur said. So why AOC? Well, it doesnt have to be her specifically, of course, but progressives should conduct the investigation.
Well youre going to say Well thats convenient, youre a progressive,' he continued. No, listen guys, it makes sense. We dont like the Trumps or the Clintons. We dont like the rich and powerful Democrats, we dont like the rich and powerful Republicans. So were going to be neutral, were going to be fair.
https://www.mediaite.com/news/watch-cenk-uygur-says-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-should-run-jeffrey-epstein-suicide-investigation/
I don't think Cenk should be assuming and asserting that Democratic congresswoman AOC, as a progressive, by definition, "doesn't like the Clintons" or that they endorse Cenk's acceptance of Trump's conspiracy theory.
Why does Cenk think he's entitled to define and pigeonhole AOC and other progressives in order to advance his agenda?
I'll continue to call out Cenk Yugur for exactly what he is: a genocide denying propagandist who amplifies right wing talking points and conspiracy theories in the service of damaging the Democratic party and boosting his bank account.
He had no problem accepting seed money for his propaganda enterprise from a Republican billionaire, and he had no problem revising a dictionary definition to suit his purposes.
Cenk's revision of a dictionary definition and his glib assurances about his definition's source demonstrates that he has so little respect for his fans that he takes for granted that they will not bother to check his sources and will simply believe whatever he says.
Cenk is his doing his best to poison the well and damage the Democrat Party. He won't get a pass from me.
