I think his brand of narcissism indicates that he does not really know that he is a "fucking idiot". You see, that's the real problem underlying his great buffoon, song and dance.
I find that people who have a good idea about how much they don't know, (and that's pretty much infinite) are able to transcend the stage of sublime ignorance and actually learn and grow in knowledge because of that. His glaring ignorance, poor vocabulary and lack of education stand out, but he is unable to make any comparisons or even acknowledge that lest he compromise his increasingly fragile narcissistic image. He has way too much invested in that now, and over a lifetime. It's a cement overcoat of ignorance he lives in. His major concern, obviously, (like a meth addict) is to maintain his narcissistic supply at all costs and WE pay for it, just like everybody else has had to.
You don't put people like him in power like that and expect any good results. You would be better off putting them away for the sake of humanity. 
So, Trump appears to be a real-time demonstration of the Dunning-Kruger effect and that may be another reason why his throngs of idol worshiping followers find him captivating, compelling and alluring.
So, at least it is obvious to us
