The sentence I hear most from well-meaning, conservative friends since President Trump’s election is this: “We suffered 8 years under Barack Obama.”

Fair enough. Let’s take a look.

The day Obama took office, the Dow closed at 7,949 points. Eight years later, the Dow had almost tripled.

General Motors and Chrysler were on the brink of bankruptcy, with Ford not far behind, and their failure, along with their supply chains, would have meant the loss of millions of jobs. Obama pushed through a controversial, $8o billion bailout to save the car industry. The U.S. car industry survived, started making money again, and the entire $80 billion was paid back, with interest.

We were more honored and respected by other countries, the economy was improving, lots of people got access to health insurance and, by extension, care that wasn't there for them before, and we had a President who very rarely got upset, didn't tweet out ugly and hurtful things, who was always gracious, intelligent, respectful, and tried to work with an opposition whose immediate reaction was to spit in his eye, even if doing so hurt the average person and whom broke so many political norms to keep their privileged status. It was really a good, safe time to be proud to be an American.

- Closes the “donut hole” (Part D) for Medicare prescription drug coverage (under Bush, Medicare helped pay for drugs up to $2,600 and above $4,550, but individuals had to pay 100% of the costs in between these amounts); now Medicare helps cover costs irrespective of the amount – seniors will now pay only 25% of drug costs up to $4,550 and only 5% of drug costs above that amount
- In 2010, an emergency provision will offer seniors a $250 rebate on the costs incurred within the “donut hole”
- Individuals living at or below the poverty line were eligible for healthcare under Medicaid, but by 2014 individuals/families living slightly above (making up to $14,404/$29,327) the poverty line will also be eligible for benefits

- All individuals must have health insurance or face a government fine; all large (over 50 employees) employers must offer health insurance to employees or pay a fine

--from at least two Republican acquaintances who would have absolutely no health care without Obamacare. Both are too lazy to work; one lives off her ex-husband's alimony checks, the other gets a monthly stipend from her boyfriend and also collects disability.

They suffered so so SO much under Obama and now are forced to pay those "exorbitant" premiums for Obamacare. Never mind pointing out the obvious to them; they just roll their eyes when confronted with facts.

If Trump ever does succeed in taking away their health coverage and the disability checks, I swear they would blame... Obama.
