(57,080 posts)The batter bunted the next pitch so that the ball went up the first base line. The pitcher fielded the ball and tried to tag the batter who was running just fast enough to get the pitcher close enough to give him a good bump. The first baseman and another player taking umbrage with the righteous shot the batter delivered to the pitcher then demonstrated their outrage by pummeling the batter.
Baseball. America's past-time.
Randall the batter did not get hit with the pitch or else he would have been awarded first base. Randle deserved to get his ass handed to him.

(16,063 posts)And I not sure I blamed him. A 90 mph ball hurts.
I stand corrected looking down post. Still, not sure I blamed him.

(18,770 posts)Forty-four years ago the Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers had a week to remember.
First, the teams got into a major on-field brawl during a game at Arlington Stadium on May 29, 1974.
During the fourth inning, Rangers second baseman Lenny Randle bunted down the first-base line and knocked Indians right-hander Bob Johnson to the ground when he tried to tag him for the out. Randle was clearly out of the base path and the hit is purposelessly violent.
Earlier in the at-bat, Johnson threw a pitch behind Randle.
Randle never made it to first base. He was tackled by Indians first baseman John Ellis and both dugouts and bullpens rushed the field. Later, in the WFAA footage provided by the G. William Jones Collection at SMU, you can see Indians catcher David Duncan trying to climb up in the stands, angrily shouting at fans just about the visitors dugout. Duncans teammates had to forcibly prevent him from leaving the dugout.
Five days later, the Rangers game in Cleveland was cut short and the Rangers were awarded a forfeit win after fans attacked Texas outfielder Jeff Burroughs and the umpires. It was 10-cent beer night at Cleveland Stadium and things didnt end well.

(57,080 posts)night and Cleveland was just showering the Ranger outfield in beer, crumpled gear cups, trash - anything throwable.
After the game ended, the angry crowd rolled a couple of cars and fights broke out in the lots and I seem to remember one or two people were killed.

(7,538 posts)Pitcher threw behind him, an intentional provocation. Baseball's a game of territoriality between the pitcher and the hitter. Each has to assert dominance. Stepping over 'the line' demands a response.
The beauty of the act was the timing and the hitter's knowledge that he would have the pitcher defenseless if he attempted to field the ball and open to a punishing blow which is perfectly legal as long as the runner stays in the base path. He in effect played the dude like a violin and then hit him with a Pete Rose forearm shiver.
