http://news.runnersworld.com/2012/08/31/paul-ryan-says-hes-run-sub-300-marathon/Updated 12:29 am
It turns out Paul Ryan has not run a marathon in less than three hoursor even less than four hours.
A spokesman confirmed late Friday that the Republican vice presidential candidate has run one marathon. That was the 1990 Grandmas Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota, where Ryan, then 20, is listed as having finished in 4 hours, 1 minute, and 25 seconds.
... In a statement issued to Runner's World by a spokesman Friday night, Ryan said of his marathon experience:
"The race was more than 20 years ago, but my brother Tobinwho ran Boston last yearreminds me that he is the owner of the fastest marathon in the family and has never himself ran a sub-three. If I were to do any rounding, it would certainly be to four hours, not three. He gave me a good ribbing over this at dinner tonight."

(4,802 posts)He overstated his time by one hour plus.. Runners do not forget their best time.. Its not as if he overstated by 10 minutes.. One hour is a big whopper for dedicated athletes.. If he lies over the small stuff, he'll tell huge whopper over important stuff.

(20,998 posts)It is also more than obvious that Ryan is used to NOT being called on his lies. This needs to change.

(306 posts)It used to be a qualification for the Boston Marathon.
I ran a 3 hour and 46 minute marathon after two years of training.
This was in 1984. To say you ran a two-fifty something is
a lie! We runners know. It is not an accidental mis-speak especially
for a twenty-year old! A sub 3 hour marathon is like a
three hundred batting average or gaining a hundred yards in
a game. Over four hours is an atta-boy and I have a few of
those. If I came home and said I ran a sub 3 hour marathon
I would be labelled a liar (for life)!

(32,700 posts)Are there any reasonable and informed republicans left? And if so, how are they digesting all the outright lies R&R are telling? I can't imagine our side rallying around two obvious liars. I remember when Grayson put out a borderline ad and he was attacked by both the left and right. When Clinton told some untruths, she lost a lot of support on our side (all is forgiven now, but just referencing past behavior).

(28,789 posts)but on MHP's show yesterday the republican on the show said "everyone does it" that stupid false equivalency as if that should excuse it. that's the excuse of an errant teenager. right is still right and lying is still wrong in my book.
i switched my support from hilary to obama after she told a whopper about being in a war zone. just lost my respect. and yes i love her again, but at the time it really soured me on her.

(14,564 posts)20 years now, of them being able to bully the "liberal media" into not calling them on their BS, and Ryan was "born" into the middle of it. His WHOLE career as a politician, and he IS a career politician, he has known a world where republicans literally can say ANYTHING with no fear of reprisal.
He is part of the generation of Rs who truly believe that being an R means they can just makes crap up and it is all good because they are republicans, the TRUE americans, the TRUE warriors of the constitution and founding fathers, and as such are so special and unique that they are above it all.

Secondly, he's lied about so much more important things this seems like a waste of time.
Yes I know, it's a point about how Ryan is a lier and republicans live in a fantasy world where Obama followed Clinton, Obama was president in 2008, and it's wrong for Obama to make cuts to medicare according to the guy who wanted to make similar cuts to medicare.
But we already have plenty of ammunition for that.

And it wasn't a slip-up, saying three hours when it was really three hours and X minutes. He even elaborated on it at some length.

(10,303 posts)But I have taken part in a half-marathon - once. Considering I am unfit, and I'm not that fond of running actually... well... I know the time it took me to do that half marathon (3 hours 45 mins official time). My wife, in the same unfit state, has done a few more 1/2's than me and she knows her times for all of them and she knows her personal best (3 hours, 30 minutes official time).
If us "extremely casual" runners know our times... then Mr. Ryan should know his.

(2,974 posts)At the age of 20, the typical ex high school athlete probably averaged 3 to 5 miles a day if they didn't compete in cross country in the fall, and IF they planned to enter an early summer marathon such as Grandma's. They might have a long Sunday run of 10 to 12 miles leading up to the marathon once every other week. You throw in a long run to get your body used to hitting the wall, and pushing it to its limit. This was a humid, and hot time of year in the midwest. NOT ideal marathon running weather. At 20 yrs old, with no cross country running experience that I've read about in his past his goal was probably to say to his pals that he finished a marathon. That's a worthy goal, except he decided to run for office then lie about it to the press. From what I read he only ran one marathon. I only ran one marathon. I remember my time within 60 seconds give, or take a few. I will go to my grave knowing what I ran that hot summer. I trained hard for months leading up to that day. I had friends in the crowd that day. I had friends in the race that day. If I ran for office I don't expect them to stay silent if I lied. He simply had to tell the truth. I'm embarrassed he's from my state, but glad that he's not a Democrat.

(32,700 posts)I remember being semi-impressed at his dedication, but if he lied about the marathon, odds are he's lying about P90 too. He probably does it once every few weeks or so. How insecure does someone have to be to make up stuff like that?
AllyCat
(16,184 posts)Someone. Really, why would he even lie about this? If it happened that long ago that he can't remember details, just say "hey, I ran a marathon once" and leave it at that. Only a pathological ld liar running for office on no good merits would feel the need to lie about something so petty. An offense to all the competitors out there who work their behinds to do their best.
