Dinesh D'Souza's "2016: Obama's America": The Five Most Hilarious Lowlights

A really funny review of Distort D'Newsa's movie - it doesn't even pretend to take it seriously, which is the only appropriate response other than ignoring it completely.

The movie of choice this week for people who hold the beliefs that A) America is the strongest, best-est country that God ever virgin-birthed and B) that that nation somehow just isn't strong enough to survive eight years of centrist Democratic leadership, Dinesh D'Souza's 2016: Obama's America actually does not touch on 2016 much at all.

Instead, it distills the anti-anticolonialist jeremiads of D'Souza's books—which already were to academic argument what fruit snacks are to fruit—into a eminently fast-forwardable travelogue through Nairobi, Kenya, Indonesia, and a magic-hour D.C., where D'Souza slumps about Droopy Dog–style in contemplation of the monuments and where flags are forever dancing on winds that we must presume are the world's most exceptional.

For what it's worth, his thesis concerns the reasons Obama returned a bust of Winston Churchill to the British Embassy early in his presidency. The only answer D'Souza entertains: that Obama is a Mau Mau anticolonial revolutionary driven to impress his dead, absentee father, a Kenyan who dared to write in 1965—two years after his homeland achieved its independence—that government regulation might sometimes be needed to rein in private industry. You might object, "But Obama has spent almost zero percent of his life with that father, and something like 75 percent of his life in the same private schools and Ivy League universities and institutions of power occupied by every other president of either party in recent American history." D'Souza's counter is to brandish Obama's memoir and proclaim, "Notice it says Dreams From My Father, not Dreams of My Father."

D'Souza is really, really obsessed with the word "from" in the title of Obama's book, no? He seems to mention it in every interview I've seen of him.

Anyway, there is a lot more at the link - its well worth the read. It makes me happy that the movie is this hilariously awful.

I must have missed the day bush took responsibility for what happened during his 8 years in office.

A favorite trick of intellectual lite-weights like D'Sousza: tell a lie that isn't fact check-able in the 3 minutes programmed for your segment.

Every so often a good one comes out, but most are simply extensions of the film-maker's ego and viewpoint.

The "gold standard" is "Hearts and Minds," the doc made about the Vietnam war, it had no narrator, it just let the politicians and military hang themselves with their own words.

made, more available funding, outlets, audience, the works. The form is seeing the best work of it's history, and the digital age is feeding that with many capabilities previous generations did not have available. All of that, and yet the conservatives can not put together a decent piece of non fiction film.

I get that the UK is an important ally, obviously, but I would still have thought that having a bust of a foreign leader in the Oval Office would have been the kind of thing D'Souza's crowd would have hated.

I honestly think that if Obama had put a bust of Churchill in the oval office, if Bush hadn't had one there, they would have found just as much fault with him for that. They have a problem with Obama, not the location of a Churchill bust; I think that's pretty clear.

I would love to be a published author someday. I don't really think my writing is good enough, but I'm fairly certain that I could write a successful right-wing screed and get it published. The standards are much, much lower, and as long as you are willing to say the things they want to hear, you don't really have to say them very well. Right-wing foundations will buy your book in bulk, and you are on the bestseller list in no time.

get into 1700 theaters?? I know, stupid question, but I've seen movies from major studios that have trouble getting into that many theaters. The distributor is based in Utah and it's called Rocky Mountain Pictures. They also distributed the Atlas Shrugged movie. There are movie theaters around my area that are showing this shit, but they wouldn't carry The Artist and The Conspirator, among many, many others. Money, Money, Money is always the answer, I guess
