Hundreds of Treasure Coast residents converged on Avalon Beach State Park Saturday morning in a struggle to rescue a pod of pilot whales that stranded themselves in the surf.
Twenty of the black marine mammals, ranging on size from small juveniles to adults weighing one ton, languished in the sun. Bystanders under the direction of biologists wrestled the animals upright to breath, covering their skins with moist towels and pouring water on them.

Such a sad sight this morning on our beach. Only 5 survived and were brought to Harbor Branch to rehab.
