Rep. Adam Smith: President Donald Trump is an 'aspiring fascist,' but America will survive him
President Donald Trump is "at least an aspiring fascist" who demands that Congress applaud him and seeks to cow a free press, Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash., chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, told City Club's "Civic Cocktail" forum on Thursday night.
With that said, however, Smith is "quite confident the country can survive this," even with more hard days ahead. "Impeachment is not a good thing. I realize where I am saying that," Smith said, in apparent reference to strong sentiments in Seattle.
Smith, elected in 1996, is dean of Washington's congressional delegation. He is a House workhorse, who has even won praise in The Stranger for his cool in answering dumb hostile questions of Fox News hosts. He has served lengthy stints on the House Intelligence Committee.
"The die is pretty much cast" on impeachment, said Smith. He believes the evidence is clear, out of Trump's mouth -- "The President hasn't even tried to hide it" -- that Trump withheld a $400 million aid package to Ukraine, seeking to force a foreign government to get dirt on political foe Joe Biden.
"The President had no authority not to release that money," said Smith. "He didn't tell anybody. He just withheld it."
