That piece was awesome even before they started the Glengarry/Glen Ross riffing. That took it from orbit around the Earth to somewhere out, way out, to the trans-Neptunian objects.

Just like studies show that people always rate their schools higher than everyone else's (oh, those failing schools aren't like my failing school--mine's better!), people always explain away their state's need for funds, pork that benefits them (because then it's needed and not pork), and the reality of what their beliefs actually mean.

A country is not a business and you can't run it like one.

In a company, if a branch costs money rather than making a profit, you shut it down.

In a country, if a state costs more than it produces you can't just shut it down. The same is true of school districts or other programs that people rely on. You can't just shut them down.

The purpose of a company is to turn a profit. If it can't do that, it shuts down.

The purpose of a country is the welfare of it's people. It needs to maintain an infrastructure, it needs to maintain certain programs, and it needs to function regardless. It is not a business. Money is not a government's goal, it's a tool for meeting it's goals. It's a tool created by and controlled by the government.
