All Gibson's asked, in return for dropping the case, was for Oberlin to put out a statement that they believed that Gibson's wasn't racist but Oberlin basically told them to fuck off and a jury made them pay out the nose.
It would be interesting to see how Oberlin students and leadership really feel about free speech by having alum Michelle Malkin try to book a speaking engagement there.

(10,528 posts)was very much appropriate but Oberlin refused and now they are paying for their many mistakes. I read about this case a while back and Oberlin did the wrong thing every chance they got.

(3,145 posts)Folks in these communities are getting seriously tired of students launching protests, many times with the enthusiastic support of college faculty and admin, at the drop of a hat.
What was most damaging was the actual break down of shoplifting calls to the police by race which showed that, contrary to the student's claims, Gibson's did not target POC.
So to recap: Oberlin student gets caught trying to use fake ID to buy wine then tries to steal it. Employee chases after thief and restrains him. Thief's buddies proceed to beat the shit out of employee until arrested by police. Triggered students launch protest in support of thief including the involvement of OC administration which becomes effort to shut business down.
But it's the fault of Gibson's according to Oberlin.

(7,265 posts)So you're "...getting seriously tired of students launching protests, many times with the enthusiastic support of college faculty and admin, at the drop of a hat"? Sorry to hear that, but Oberlin College has a proud history of standing up for liberal causes going back to your grandparents, great-grandparents and probably g-g grandparents.
Just for starters:
Oberlin's progressive history began during the antebellum period. In 1835 it became the first predominantly white collegiate institution to admit African American male students and two years later it opened its doors to all women, becoming the first coeducational college in the country.
Sorry to hear folks are "getting seriously tired." They'll just have to pull themselves up by the bootstraps and get over it.
