(269,263 posts)U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings of Baltimore, a key figure in the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, did not return to his office as expected this week following a medical procedure.
The chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee had said in a Sept. 30 statement that his doctors anticipated his return to Washington when the House comes back into session in two weeks and that he remained in constant communication with his staff and congressional colleagues.
But Cummings, a Democrat, missed two roll call votes on Tuesday, the first day back following the recess. His office declined to comment on Wednesday about his condition or when he is expected to return.
Cummings, 68, has not participated in a roll call vote since Sept. 11.

(63,959 posts)he knew Nancy has the gavel and will use it to protect the Constitution. I'll never forget one of those committee hearings he roared at someone that they were questioning. He was so angry.
The Black caucus has some of the best representatives, we are lucky to have them.

(54,491 posts)Great men speak with eloquence, and are often humble. Such was Elijah Cummings.
His will be shoes that will not easily be filled. I don't know the law for succession in Maryland. The Governor is a Republican, but reputed to be a decent guy. If there will be a special election, so much the better, but if Maryland law dictates that the Governor appoint a caretaker for the post, I hope Larry Hogan will respect the office just vacated and appoint someone who will satisfy the will and the desires of the people of Cummings' district. If he instead appoints some sleazebag right wing extremist Republican just to please McCarthy, his reputation for being a moderate (and his chances for re-election) should go the way of the rotary phone.
