Romney will lead the coup in the Senate.
He will go to Trump in December along with Murkowski and a few others and tell Trump that there are the necessary 20 GOP Senate votes to join the Dems and remove him from office.
Instead of being humiliatingly removed from office, he will broker a deal for a full pardon from President Pence and resign.
The GOPs 4 states that have already cancelled their GOP primaries will reinstate them.
Romney will win their nomination easily.
He then names Haley as his running mate.
The Dems will counter with either Biden/Harris or Warren/(Booker or Castro) as our ticket.
In November 2020, many MAGAts loyal to Trump will stay home angry at Romney & GOP.
We will win 300 electoral votes and popular vote by 5 million.
We will increase our House margin and reclaim the Senate.
I have seen the future.
If youre smart, you will call your bookie today and bet the mortgage.

(15,381 posts)And I'm sure if not this scenario, he's got one that he fantasizes about and might even find the guts to go for, but neither party tends to run candidates for president who previously were their nominees who lost. Plus, he's Mormon, and damn it, evangelicals already have enough on their plates being hypocritical pieces of shit when it comes to propping up Trump. You can't just expect them to switch gears and pretend that before and after a Romney's candidacy they're not denouncing Mormonism as a cult (on the rare occasion their sermons aren't about denouncing LGBTQ+ people), but they believe Mormons are actual Christians. They've already done that once; it didn't work out for them, and it's just exhausting.

(6,679 posts)Don has been SOOOO bad for R's that I think they will go with someone they consider a RINO ... Mormon no less ... if they have to.
Now, I don't believe Romney can win in Nov... but the R's might pick him as the horse in these circumstances.

For Trump to abdicate, he would first have to realize that he's not getting away with his crimes this time.
Instead, Trump fails to realize (or refuses to realize) that his actions are actually criminal. Trump has never been held accountable, so the thought of being held accountable is alien to him. He ACTUALLY thinks that he will be vindicated.
2.
Romney won the 2012 primary because all the other candidates fizzled out in some sort of scandal or gotcha-moment. Every single week a new Republican was the frontrunner, but never Romney. Romney never excited the GOP-voters. In the end, he became the GOP candidate because he was the least unelectable. He was the luke-warm compromise nobody was fully happy with.
As Trump has whipped up the republican voters into cult-like crazy, they would never be satisfied with someone as dull, effete and stiff as Romney.
Whoever comes after Trump, he must be at least as crazy as Trump or else the republican voters stay home.

Maybe Ted Cruz?
however, while Cruz is evil, he also doesn't have the con-man charisma of Trump who can command news cycles almost every day

(238 posts)Main stream republicans would love that ticket but the republican party has been infested with magats that would never go for that.
I am looking forward to the republican civil war
they are going to roll over to 45 either way.
Even if he loses he will still have complete control over the party.
FAR too many of their voters have fallen into his influence, and for all their bravado Rs are cowardly pukebags and won't risk losing their "base" - not to mention the overwhelming majority of their high level elected officials are full on MAGATs at this point.
They only way he won't is if somehow this country has the heart and soul to bring him to justice and he goes to jail for the endless stream of crimes has has committed.

except I think it'll be Ryan, not Romney at the top of the ticket.....he recently joined the board of Faux Views, and moved his family out of Wisconsin back to DC....might be Haley as VP.
I think the Repukes might vote to remove trump with a secret ballot in the Senate. Then, when all his crimes come to light after he's removed, they will say he was never a Republican, but really a Democrat.

(11,861 posts)Ryan just moved his family back to Washington. What worries me is that all of the Republican "Never Trumpers" on the cable news shows will begin to call the Republican mutineers against Trump, "The Saviors of The Republic"... hosannah, etc.
They are not our friends just because they oppose Trump.
That is what we will be up against.

(14,564 posts)1) You are more likely to have no senators to vote for convict than 20+, by a factor of 1,000,000,000
2) He will NOT step down, proven by common sense that he is a deranged budding dictator and the fact that DU has had dozens of moments that people have been dead sure he would quit the race, quit after being elected and before taking office, quit after taking office, etc, and ... he plows forward toward becoming a dictator.
3) Heck, we might not even be able to get him out of there IF we can clearly win the election.

(17,862 posts)Why would he give up his primary source of power. Even after all that has gone on he still has received little GOP push back. Republicans just run when questions are asked.
Impeachment is to get as much of this crap out to the Independent voter. Also it is the Constitutional thing to do. He will not be removed. The only way he leaves before the election is because of health. There will not be any credible nomination fight.

(53,061 posts)They will move as a group
In 1974 no GOP Senator announced for removal until the polls reached 58% and then they moved as a group.
Polls here just hit 54% and we haven't had any hearings.
If support for Trump goes beloe 32% then even their safe Senate seats are in danger.
I believe there are13 GOP Senators that voted for Clinton's removal who would be vulnerable to an ad campaign financed by Steyer or someone else.
I still don't think that he will be removed but it is possible and the WH is doing everything to help.
Watch Sen Burr, he is likely to be the first.

But 20 anti trump votes might happen. In addition to the 3 R senators retiring, the 3 shaky R senators in purple/blue states - there are 20 R senators that are not up for reelection until 2022 and 10 more are not up for reelection until 2024 - some of those 36 R's might just turn on trump since they don't have to fear the magas in next year's election...

(7,733 posts)For awhile. Republicans want Trump and his stink to go away fast. Romney gets them to the good ole days, Haley counters any female Democrats put up. She is the only female politician they have with any gravitas.
They might just give it up this cycle and let the Democrats once again come in and do all the heavy lifting and fix all their blunders. That would entail full exposure of a corrupt GOP. The old guard is trying to save their brand, so this way has a severe downside for them.
