Strategically brilliant sellout: Trumps betrayal of the Kurds
<snip>
Off the record, a U.S. defense official has conceded that the U.S. nukes at Incirlik were now essentially Erdogans hostages, but to remove them from there would not only be a politically ticklish endeavor but also would almost certainly mean the end of the U.S.-Turkey alliance and possibly, even NATO itself.
<snip>
In view of the abandonment of the Kurds by the U.S., not the mention the JCPOA, the Iran nuclear deal, how could the Islamic Republic of Iran negotiate with such a partner? Of the 374 treaties negotiated by the U.S. with indigenous peoples of North America, only one was honored. Although signing on the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, the U.S. has neither ratified nor enforced it. Trump withdrew from the 2015 Paris Climate Accord; Bush II withdrew from the 1998 Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. The United States is the only nation to have not ratified the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child, the 1996 Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, the 1997 Mine-Ban Treaty, and over forty other treaties.
Rather than being the savior of the world, as U.S. President Woodrow Wilson haughtily proclaimed at the Treaty of Versailles after the First World War, the U.S. seems hell-bent on being its scourge. Trumps betrayal of the Kurds not only should give ample evidence of U.S. perfidy, but also should be a lesson for all who fancy themselves as allies of the United States. - Modern Diplomacy E.U.

If holding military aid to Ukraine in an effort to exonerate Russia of charges of election interference and to dig up dirt on a political opponent had not been enough for Republican politicians, then the betrayal of American allies in Syria might have done the trick. Even they finally realized that allowing Recep Tayyip Erdogan to destroy the Kurds ushered in a brave new world one in which America is ruled by a Russian asset, erstwhile American allies are dirt while two-bit strongmen are friends and allies, and the American military is on the run. It is a world in which Ukraine, too, will be surrendered to Vladimir Putin in a late-night phone call or on Twitter.

(14,961 posts)1. I have been wondering if this mess could lead to the end
of NATO.

(22,670 posts)2. The announcement of U.S. withdrawal from NATO will come in the form of a tweet.
How can our allies trust us ever again? It would just take republicans back in power to unravel generations of mutual cooperation.
Heck, they cannot trust sharing intel with us. Things must be getting worse.
