Purge of about 300,000 voter registrations planned in Georgia

By Mark Niesse, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
About 330,000 voter registrations in Georgia could soon be canceled because registrants havent participated in elections for several years.
The purge comes after Georgia canceled 534,119 registrations in July 2017, the largest single removal of voters in U.S. history.
Under a new state law, election officials will notify voters before canceling their registrations, a step that didnt exist two years ago.
The voter list cleanup, announced Monday by the secretary of states office, reinforces Georgias role as a voting rights and political battleground ahead of next years elections for president and two U.S. Senate seats. Last year, voting rights helped define the race for governor between Democrat Stacey Abrams and Republican Brian Kemp, who won by 1.4 percentage points.

There are times when I want to reach across the aisle and throttle these attacks on our democracy. Then, I settle down, realize that my anger is showing, and work harder toward the goal.

(1,713 posts)Are Democrats the only individuals that haven't voted in several election cycles? This could hurt tbe GOP, right? My advice is if you get notified, make sure you do what you have to do. Right now, we have to play the game. It's maddening that these people haven't voted.

(31,261 posts)People need to vote in every election, the local ones actually affect them more than the national ones for everyday issues.
If a person gets a notice that they will be removed from voting roles and don't do anything, or if they don't periodically check their voting status, then they are saying that they either don't give a shit or are ok with the way things are being run, those people WILL NOT help us, we need to focus on people that are motivated to protect their vote.

(31,261 posts)I have never voted in an election where poll watchers for both parties were not present. It's the races for Mayor, Conmisioner, State Rep, State Senate that end up affecting people the most, including their right to vote. Georgia had a runoff for the office that supervised elections and voter roles, democrats underperformed in that election, now we see the consequence of not enough democrats caring to vote and helping the democrat to win the office. Instead a wolf in sheep's clothing republican won, and now Georgia voters are being purged from voting roles, my bet is they will work to not adequately notify the people affected, or figure out a way to only notify some of them.

Now, in Georgia, you have to go about 7 years without voting, and fail to answer mailed notifications. Even if purged, one can reregister online up to a month or two before an election. Even when inactive, you can still vote provisionally. Democratic organizations, churches, etc., will help you.
Its a non-issue for 99.99% of the population.
If not sure, Check your registration 6 months before an election, then vote. Heck, in Georgia you can vote 4 weeks early and even do it by mail. There is absolutely no excuse for not voting.
And, in 2018, there were no complaints of being turned away at polls, other than maybe 5 people who showed up at polls and were told they would have to vote provisionally. Turns out they were in wrong precinct, but were still allowed to vote.
Vote, no excuse.
