Gainesville (FL) Sun editorial: Gov. Scott opposition to expanding Medicaid under the federal ACA

wrong on humanitarian and financial grounds.

Editorial: On second thought

Gov. Rick Scott

Gov. Rick Scott's opposition to expanding Medicaid under the federal Affordable Care Act was already unfortunate from a humanitarian standpoint.

To abruptly reject health care coverage for more than 1 million Florida residents as Scott did — without consulting the Legislature or considering funding options — was shortsighted. But from a stark economic view alone, Scott's stance is questionable and demands legislative scrutiny.

A Scott spokesman this month said that, even if the governor's figures were wrong, there would be “strings attached” to Medicaid that the state can't afford.

A study by the Urban Institute found that the cost of Medicaid expansion would be more than offset by savings from reductions in uncompensated hospital care and the impact of billions of federal dollars injected into the health care economy. ... The Legislature and Scott should reconsider the governor's hasty rejection of a highly beneficial, if imperfect, solution.

Another republican response of "even if the figures we used are wrong" our policy is still right. IOW, the facts we used to justify our policy were wrong, but just ignore that and trust us.

No republican governor will reverse their opt-outs from Medicaid expansion under ACA during the presidential campaign, but many will do so ("quietly" they hope) after the election.

Rick Scott, as CEO of Columbia HCA, had no problem enriching himself fraudulently off of Medicaid.

What a crooked hypocrite!
