The Nielsen Co. estimates that about 30.3 million viewers across 11 television networks watched convention coverage Thursday night when Mitt Romney delivered his prime-time speech accepting the GOP presidential nomination. That's a 23 percent plunge from the same night four years ago when nearly 39 million people tuned in to watch then-GOP nominee John McCain address the convention and the nation. The erosion of TV viewership from 2008 was sharper still on Wednesday night when Romney running mate Paul Ryan drew about 22 million viewers for his acceptance speech. That's a 41 percent drop from 2008 when some 37 million tuned in for vice presidential hopeful Sarah Palin's debut on the national stage.
The Republican convention drew an older audience on TV. Of the 22 million who watched Ann Romney speak on Tuesday night, Nielsen found that nearly 15 million were 55 or older. Only 1.5 million were age 18-34.

Don't the pukes know that you don't run the convention keynotes against shows aimed directly at the voting base. I mean it's Toddler Porn and Tiaras vs. the RNC, no self-respecting redneck right wing asshole is going to tune out the toddlers just to watch a Mormon make an ass of himself in Tampa.

(18,048 posts)Not only that but many of the young people who will be watching the video awards can multitask and watch online. But Nielsen can't measure those numbers.

(18,048 posts)I'm saying that Nielsen numbers won't reflect that.
If young people know they're voting for Obama, and want to catch their favorite band's antics on the video awards, hey, that's young people. Or they might watch Obama online and the awards on the tv. It doesn't really matter, we all know they trend Obama.
Nielsen isn't going to know any better. Nielsen will just report that viewership was down (if it does indeed go down).
I'm saying I'm not gonna be worried if Nielsen numbers are down--it won't accurately reflect voting likelihoods.
But let that Nielsen number be good and I will brag all over the place!
